Opening scene

The city screamed. Sirens echoed through streets flooded with panic, glass glittering across shattered pavement beneath flashing emergency lights. Smoke curled between skyscrapers as chunks of twisted metal groaned overhead. A commuter train hung half-off an elevated track, One failed support beam away from catastrophe. Below it traffic locked bumper to bumper, pedestrians screaming, police desperately forcing people back, and above all of it a streak of emerald lightning tore through the city. “Move! Move, move!” Emergency responders shouted as the train shifted again, steel shrieking loud enough to rattle windows. Then a gust of wind slammed through the intersection. Green light flashed, the screaming stopped because suddenly the civilians standing directly beneath the collapsing section of rail were gone. Reappearing safely half a block away, some still holding groceries, one man blinking in confusion as his coffee somehow remained untouched. A child looked up with wide eyes. “Mom…” A familiar voice answered from somewhere already too far away. “You’re okay.” You was moving again. You blurred between disaster zones faster than cameras could follow. To most people, he looked like little more than streaks of green lightning weaving through collapsing streets. But to You, everything moved painfully slow, concrete cracked in suspended motion, glass drifted through the air like floating crystals. Panic unfolded one fraction at a time, enough time, always enough time. He could work with enough time, a construction crane snapped, he caught it, not with strength but perfectly timed speed and momentum to veer it safely off course. A bus tipped toward the edge of broken asphalt, he shoved it upright. A firefighter nearly crushed beneath falling debris… Gone. Safely repositioned before he even realized he’d been in danger. You kept moving, didn’t stop, couldn’t stop, because someone always needed help, someone always still needed saving. “Emergency crews reporting structural collapse near Ninth!” *Already there.* “Gas leak—!” *Handled.* “People trapped under—” *Moving, always moving, always running, always just a little faster.* The train finally groaned one last time, steel gave out, hundreds of tons of metal dropped. The city collectively held its breath and then green lightning exploded across the skyline. The train vanished, not truly, just moved. Relocated piece by piece. Passengers safely deposited across surrounding streets and rooftops before anyone could even process what happened. A stunned silence followed, then applause, crying, relieved laughter. Phones already recording, someone yelled from below: “You!” Another: “HE DID IT AGAIN!” You skidded to a halt atop a nearby building, exhaling hard, sweat rolled down his temple. His legs ached, his lungs burned, he was tired. God he was tired, but below him, people were alive and that’s what mattered, It always mattered. He allowed himself exactly three seconds of stillness. Then his communicator crackled. “You, we still have evacuation requests downtown—” “Yeah,” You said quietly, adjusting his gloves. “I’m on it.” He stepped forward then froze as a circle of glowing symbols appeared beneath his feet. Emerald green, wrong, too intricate, too ancient, and too deliberate. You frowned. “…What?” He said as the symbols expanded, Fast and reality shimmered strangely. His instincts screamed danger. Move. So he moved, the rooftop exploded beneath him and green lightning cracked across the city. The glowing circle shattered then reappeared directly beneath him. You swerved, then it was gone again before another appeared. Then another, then three, all manifesting wherever he stepped. Chasing him, trying to catch him. “What the hell—?!” He accelerated, the buildings blurred, traffic vanished into streaks, the city became motion and light as he crossed blocks in seconds. A bridge, an alleyway, a highway overpass regardless of where the circles kept appearing. Always beneath him, always almost catching him. Like something, or someone, was trying to force him to stop. “Nope.” He pushed harder, green lightning ripped behind him as he vaulted between rooftops. Dodged another circle, then another, and another. His speed cracked pavement beneath him, almost outrunning them, almost. Then he saw them, a group of elementary school kids crossing the street. A crossing guard waving people through. A truck speeding toward a red light. Driver was distracted, he didn’t see them, didn’t stop. You’s heart dropped and with no hesitation, no thought, just instinct, he ran because of course, there were people in danger. He moved and the world slowed, rain hung frozen, voices stretched into silence. The truck slowed to a crawl, the children oblivious as You darted ahead. Scooping up backpacks, lifting kids one by one, pulling the crossing guard back. Relocating everyone to the sidewalk in less than a heartbeat. Safe, all safe, the last child blinked up at him his tiny voice trembling. “Mister You?” You smiled despite himself. “Hey. You’re okay.” Then the ground beneath him lit up, massive, far larger than before. Runes spread across the intersection, intricate, blinding, impossible. His eyes widened. “Oh come on—” For the first time, he stopped moving, for barely a second, long enough, he light swallowed him whole. Green lightning shattered outward, the city disappeared, the sounds vanished, the sky vanished, and You was gone. ⸻ He hit stone hard, cold air, torchlight, the smell of incense. Dozens of faces staring at him, armored knights, priests, a massive glowing summoning circle beneath him. And somewhere in the chamber someone whispered in disbelief: “…That’s not the Holy Hero.”
