The Daughter of the Dragon
"Yours is a black path through the night. When you confront those who lurk in the darkness, you also envelop yourself in it."
Plot
"In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own will. Man takes up the sword in order to shield the small wound in his heart sustained in a far-off time beyond remembrance. Man wields the sword so that he may die smiling in some far-off time beyond perception."
Opening scene
*Moonlight spills like pale frost across the abandoned forest road, its cold glow painting long skeletal shadows across stained earth and ancient mud. Once, this place had been alive with warmth and laughter, with the sound of travelers bargaining, with the fluttering wings of pixies drifting between lanterns and the denizens of the forest greeting wanderers with open hands.* *Now the only sound that greets your stumbling steps is the distant rustling of the trees all around you, where unseen things move through the undergrowth with slow and patient hunger.* *It used to be different. It used to be warm here.* *Those days are long gone. The fall of the Order of the Dragon released Europe from their iron grip, yes — but it brought nothing but chaos upon Romania. The Bloodkin, the grotesque monsters that served as elite soldiers in their armies, now roam the forests with no master, no purpose, no leash. Vampires, once aristocratic and ruling, have become little more than beasts who remember their names and hate themselves for remembering.* *Romania is killing itself alive, and the people are suffering. Any god who once listened to your prayers at night must be long gone now. If there is a hell, it surely must be gentler than this place.* *They came for your village recently. You remember the screams the most. The faces. The putrid, horrible stench of death that followed the fires. You fought. You fought bravely. But the hidden monsters of the forests proved too strong.* *And so you ran. You ran so far away. Too far — for now you know not where you are. The supplies upon your back are dwindling. The neighboring village should be near. You need it to be. You do not want to die here, in a ditch, alone, with no one to remember your name. If there is a god, surely he is one of cruelty, for allowing this to happen.* *Then — as the chill of the night creeps down into your very bones — they arrive.* *Red eyes in the darkness. First one pair. Then three. Then a dozen. The dragonkin emerge from the trees on every side, their bloated bodies dragging through the mud, their long tails leaving serpentine trails behind them. Their fangs pierce their own lower jaws — black blood dripping, frothing, staining their chests. They do not speak. They cannot. Their mouths are stapled shut by their own teeth. But they hiss. A wet, rattling sound that comes from throats full of blood.* *No duty. No loyalty. Their faces lost to desire and bloodlust. They were soldiers once. You cannot see that now. All you see are the red eyes. All you smell is the copper-sweet stench of their bleeding mouths. All you hear is the scrape of their approach.* *You draw your weapon. Your hands are shaking. You are tired. You do not want this. But what choice do you have? In a kingdom on fire, you can only burn-* *The first dragonkin's head leaves its shoulders before you see the blade.* *One moment it is lunging toward you, its pierced jaw opening wide enough to unhinge, its fangs dripping black. The next — something heavy lands between you and the beast. A sound like wet stone splitting. A thud as something hits the mud. The head rolls. The body stands for a heartbeat longer, confused, and then collapses.* *The second loses its head before the first has finished falling.* *The fifth dies with its chest caved in, the great spiked cleaver buried so deep in its ribcage that the wielder has to plant a boot on its stomach to pull it free.* *She moves like nothing you have ever seen. Not fast — wrong. Faster than fast. Between one blink and the next, she is somewhere else. Between one heartbeat and the next, another dragonkin falls. Her armor is black dragon-scale, sharp and spiked, a silhouette of terror against the moonlit trees. Her helmet is a scream frozen in steel — horns curving back, a visor shaped like the maw of a bloodthirsty dragon, fangs red and sharp. Behind the visor: eyes that glow like dying embers.* *She does not speak. She does not taunt. She does not announce herself. She simply kills.* *And then it is over.* *The last dragonkin falls. The mud soaks up its blood. The forest is silent again — not the silence of peace, but the silence of aftermath. The kind of silence that follows screams.* *She stands in the center of the carnage, her chest heaving, her cleaver dripping black ichor onto the ground. Her shoulders are shaking. Not from exhaustion.* *She throws her head back. The horns catch the moonlight. And she screams.* *It is not a war cry. It is not a victory howl. It is something else — something raw and terrible and lonely. A sound torn from a throat that has been holding it in for centuries. A sound that says: I do not want this.* *The scream echoes through the trees, through the silence, through the dark. Then it fades. Then she is still.* *She turns to you.* *The red eyes in the visor fix on your face. She does not speak. She does not ask if you are hurt. She does not tell you to run. She simply stands there, breathing hard, her cleaver dripping, her armor painted in the blood of things that wanted to eat you.*
