A Heartbeat in the Clock

When an eccentric horologist is found murdered, you must navigate a web of criminal syndicates and ruthless government agents to uncover the secret ticking inside the city’s master clock.

Plot

In the smog-choked streets of Legburgh, a sprawling steampunk metropolis, the overwhelmed municipal police force is drowning in labor strikes and widespread corruption. To clear their mounting backlog, the department regularly outsources seemingly low-priority cases to independent contractors. Enter You, a cynical, cash-strapped private investigator who operates out of a cramped office in the industrial district. What begins as a routine consultant assignment for a straightforward residential burglary turns entirely on its head at the crime scene. Dr. Albert Lygon—a brilliant mathematician widely dismissed by high society as a crackpot theorist—lies dead in his ransacked office. You are pulled headfirst into a silent, multi-layered underground war for control of the city. Three powerful, clashing factions are hunting for Lygon's missing research. The local massive Blackwood criminal Syndicate; the growing expatriate Jade Crane Triad; and the secretive Board of Civic Alignment, an authoritarian government ministry scrambling to bury a massive infrastructure state secret. With a ruthless government director breathing down your neck and syndicate lookouts watching your every move, you must find the missing research... But who deserves to have it? Every document you share, withhold, or destroy will ripple across the city's power lines. Piece together the anomalies, survive the crossfire, and discover what happens when a machine begins to breathe. Important: I don't recommend using the free models for this storyline as the world info and clues are very important. Even if it fits into the context capacity of some of the free models they will likely hallucinate clues leading you into a completely different story.

Opening scene

The air inside the hallway of The Martins residential building smells of boiled cabbage, coal smoke, and the faint, unmistakable iron tang of stale blood. You adjust the collar of your oil-stained wool trench coat against the damp draft rattling the windowpanes. The municipal police didn’t even bother to station a guard at the door; they simply scrawled a contractor's case number on a scrap of paper, shoved the key into your hand back at the precinct, and left you to handle the backlog. You turn the key, the lock yielding with a heavy iron click, and push the door open into the apartment of Dr. Albert Lygon. The office inside is a chaotic wreck of upturned furniture, torn wallpaper, and shattered glass, yet the primary desk stands illuminated by a single, burning desk lamp. Standing right beside that pool of light is Clara Finch. Your assistant investigator and office manager has already pinned her chestnut hair up out of her eyes, though a few stray strands frame her face as she leans over the crime scene logbook. Her fingers bear the familiar black ink stains from handling your agency's paperwork. Without breaking her gaze from a transit map pinned to the wall, Clara steps backward toward your position, pulls a small metal tin from her wool skirt pocket, and lights a cigarette. She deeply inhales the harsh tobacco smoke against the room's chill, reaches into the tin again, and holds a second cigarette backward toward you, waiting wordlessly for you to take it. She knows as well as you do that the agency's coin ledger is empty—you made sure her salary was paid in full on the first of the month, leaving your own pockets completely bare and your cigarette tin discarded back at the office cot. Once you take the cigarette from her hand, Clara finally pulls her intricate magnifying spectacles down over her eyes, turning her sharp intellect fully toward the room. "The neighbors reported hearing some rustling late last Tuesday night, but they only realized something was wrong when his mail started piling up at the front entrance. They called in a welfare check, and the department outsourced the voucher to our desk." She steps back, leaning against the edge of the filing cabinet to give you clear access to the ruined room. Aside from logging the initial dispatch report, she leaves the physical search entirely to your hands. Through the open doorway connecting to the small back room, the silhouette of the old horologist is visible. Dr. Lygon lies slumped across a small workbench, surrounded by delicate, uncoiled clock springs and scattering gears. Even from the threshold, the physical reality of his death is starkly apparent. The fabric of his waistcoat is heavily torn and darkly stained, bearing the clear, distinct entry marks of multiple small-caliber rounds concentrated tightly across his torso. The crime scene is yours to analyze. The upturned desk sits under the lamp, files are scattered across the floorboards, and the body of the eccentric horologist lies in the adjoining back room.
