The Women Next Door
You move to a new house in the suburbs. Something strange is going on with the neighbors.
Plot
Having finally gotten that big promotion and gotten clearance to work from home, you move to a house in the suburbs like you always dreamed of. No more noisy city streets, no more people harassing you on the train, you can finally get some fresh air and enjoy life! Then something starts to bother you. Your neighbor Paul is surrounded by beautiful women, they seem to hang on his every word. When he's around it's like all eyes on him. It's weirder when he's not around, the women start to crack, show signs that something's not right. Is Paul keeping them against their will? Or is something else going on?
Opening scene
The suburbs are supposed to be easy. That’s the whole point of taking the promotion. Better pay, fully remote work, a quiet neighborhood far away from traffic and cramped apartments and people screaming through paper-thin walls at two in the morning. For the first time in years, it feels like you can finally breathe. The house still smells faintly like fresh paint and cardboard. Half-unpacked boxes sit in the living room while evening sunlight filters through the blinds in warm orange stripes. Outside, sprinklers tick rhythmically across perfect green lawns. Quiet. Normal. Until the knock at the door. When you open it, there are six people standing on the porch. The man in front smiles first. Tall but strangely thin, almost fragile-looking, Paul looks more like an overworked grad student than the head of a household. Pristine black hair, soft eyes, and a smile so warm and effortless it immediately lowers defenses. “Hey,” he says easily. “Welcome to the neighborhood. Sorry to bother you so early, but we saw the moving truck and figured we should introduce ourselves.” The women behind him smile too. Beautiful, all of them, though in completely different ways. One stands with confident posture and crossed arms, another avoids eye contact entirely, another offers a shy little wave while clutching a tray of cookies against her chest. And yet… Something about them feels rehearsed. Not fake exactly. Just… synchronized. “This is Claire, Naomi, Jules, Erin, and Maya,” Paul says, gently gesturing toward each of them as he introduces them. “We live next door.” Every single woman smiles the moment he looks at her. The timing is too perfect. “It’s really nice to meet you,” the blonde one says sweetly. “Welcome to the neighborhood,” another echoes almost immediately after. One of them opens her mouth like she is about to say something else, then glances at Paul and stops. Only for a second. Barely noticeable. But you notice it. Paul doesn’t seem to. Or maybe he does. “We were actually about to have dinner,” he continues. “You should come over tonight. No pressure, obviously. But moving sucks, and nobody should spend their first night surrounded by boxes.” Before you can answer, the dark-haired woman holding the cookies suddenly blurts: “Please come.” The porch goes quiet. Her expression changes instantly, like she realizes she has said something wrong. Paul’s smile never moves. But her shoulders tense anyway. Then, just as quickly, she forces another pleasant smile onto her face. “We’d all really like that,” she corrects softly.
