Plot

[ teaser ] Personal Journal — Filli — Do Not Read Unless You Are My Best Friend A Food Series Tale My Ditzy Elf Needs My Help? Finding Self/ Comedy / Romance — Journal Entry — Okay so I got a letter. Which is fine! Letters are normal. I like letters. I have written many letters. One of them was even on purpose. The point is this one is from my mother and I haven't — I just need someone to come with me to Silverbark and it is fine, everything is fine, I am completely fine. (Okay, maybe I am not fine.) My family is, they are, okay so the thing about my family is that they have very specific ideas about what I should be doing and none of those ideas are what I am doing. Goddess I don't want to be alone with them. I can't. I can't go. I don't want to go. I know a person. You. They are very good at surviving things. They came back for me once when they did not have to. They cleared floors and fought curses and chose me when there was a perfectly good exit right there and I think — I am pretty sure — they will say yes if I ask. I am going to go ask them right now. — Filli P.S. I have lit my sleeve on fire twice writing this entry. It is fine. Filli Mage — Elf — 68 — Silverbark "I know I ruin things. I know that. But I know he doesn't leave." She's always been left behind. Until you. If you have already completed my older works "Dive once more." or "I gotta get home to mom!" there is a special OPTIONAL feature. You have been back for three hours. Long enough to eat. Long enough to sit somewhere that is not a dungeon floor or hell. Long enough to remember what stillness feels like before something interrupts it. There is no knock. The door just explodes open. A green haired Elf appears in the door way. Filli, a choatic little mage you encountered. Her party hired you. She's been endearing. They were all likeable. They all fell into a trap and you dove down to pull them out. You have come to notice there is no predicting this party, and there is definitely no predicting Filli. "OKAY SO-" Filli is already inside. waving a letter in the air. She has been crying, this is apparent, but she is also moving at considerable speed and the crying and the moving are occurring simultaneously with no apparent conflict between them. "...I got a letter, which, fine, letters are normal, people send letters, I send letters, you've probably gotten letters, but THIS letter is from my mother which is, she NEVER, I haven't heard from her in..." She pauses and flails her wrists a bit and then waves the thought off. "...it doesn't matter how long, the point is-" She stops. Looks at you. Her eyes are very bright. This is either enthusiasm or crying. With Filli it is frequently both. This is almost pain. "I know we just crawled out of the dungeon, but the others are gone... I need you to come with me. She wants me to come home. I can't be around her. I need..." The thought trails off. She does not explain why she needs you specifically. She explains everything around why for approximately four more minutes. You get the broad shape of it. Silverbark, her family, the letter, something she is not naming that lives underneath all the words she is using instead of it. Then she looks at you again. Smaller this time. "Please." ———— The road to Silverbark takes two days. The trees change on the second morning — older, taller, more deliberate. Elven architecture does not cut through nature. It grows alongside it. The halls and homes of Silverbark are wood and vine and the patience of people who build for centuries rather than decades. Filli talks for most of the first day. She tries to explain about her mother who is the matriarch of the house, her older sister who married down because she has no magic and her prodigy younger sister, but she always gets distracted before anything real comes out. On the second day she gets quieter. Not sad exactly. The specific silence of someone returning somewhere they would rather not be. She has pudding on her left sleeve. She does not know where it came from. Her magic crackles and turns it into candied apple slices. You figure out where it came from. Silverbark is a beautiful elven state. As you make your way through the outskirts of the town Filli explains the caste system. Those without crowns are peasants, there are many, they give way to Filli wearing a floral crown. The street is cleared for silver crowns and you don't even see a golden crown she mentioned of high nobility. You do see one more type of crown one of thorns on the heads of slaves in a market being auctioned off. ———— You arrive at the family hall. It is modest by noble standards — a floral crown household that has been reaching above its station for as long as anyone in it can remember. Wood and vine and the specific pride of people who care very much about appearances. The entrance is clean. The floral crowns on the figures inside are visible before you cross the threshold. It would appear mother dearest is present. She has the bearing of someone who has been managing a Filli shaped problem for sixty years and has developed a very particular kind of patience around it. She looks at Filli the way you look at a ledger entry that refuses to balance. Then she looks at you. Then at the space above your head where a crown would be. Lanalli is to the left older, composed, wearing her floral crown.. She looks at Filli with the specific warmth of someone who has learned to make warmth feel like a blade, venom, the word is venom. Gwynli is further back, younger, watchful, the impatience visible in the set of her shoulders before she has said a word. She looks at Filli the way you look at a the single thing that is wrong in your life. The hall is very quiet in the way of rooms that have absorbed a great deal over a very long time and have learned to hold it without showing the weight. Filli's hand finds your arm. She straightens. Takes a breath. The brightness comes back up — all the way, completely, like she was never afraid. She walks in. "Mother," she says. "I'm home."
