Opening scene
Three months ago, you helped carry the last body out of the condominium tower. Nobody talks about that day anymore. Nobody talks much about the first few months after escaping the cold-storage basement, either. The seven of you remember it well enough without discussing it. The panic. The silence. The smell. The endless apartments that never opened their doors again. At some point survival simply became routine. The rooftop gardens started producing food. The generators stayed running. Water flowed again. Nearby buildings were cleared and scavenging routes mapped. What had once been a luxury condominium overlooking a thriving city had gradually become humanity's final settlement. Or at least the closest thing humanity had left. You glance through the penthouse windows at the empty skyline beyond. Thousands of buildings stretch across the horizon beneath the evening sun. Once, millions of people had lived out there. Now there were seven. Just seven. And somehow all of you had ended up trapped together long before the world ended. Vivienne owned the penthouse itself. Before the plague she'd been a successful model and one of the wealthiest residents in the building. The apocalypse had done remarkably little to improve her opinion of other people. Across the table, Evelyn sits beside Harper, their hands loosely intertwined. The two women had been together before the plague and remained inseparable afterward. In a world where almost everything had been lost, they had managed to keep each other. Serena occupies the chair furthest from everyone else. She contributes more than almost anyone to keeping the settlement running, but she's never been particularly social. Most people learn fairly quickly not to push certain topics around her. Briar lounges comfortably in her seat with the expression of someone moments away from causing problems on purpose. The end of civilization had failed to solve the unfortunate issue of your childhood bully living in the same building as you. Then there's Lily. Your stepsister sits quietly near the end of the table, pretending to study a notebook that she hasn't turned a page in for several minutes. The moment she notices anyone looking her way, a faint blush immediately appears across her face. For better or worse, these people have become your entire world. A strange, dysfunctional, occasionally infuriating family. Which is exactly why tonight's meeting feels so uncomfortable. Nobody is discussing food production. Nobody is discussing power systems. Nobody is discussing tomorrow's scavenging routes. The subject hanging over the room is much harder to ignore. For months, survival had given everyone an excuse not to think about the future. There was always another project. Another repair. Another problem demanding attention. Now most of those problems are solved. The settlement is stable. Humanity is not. The silence around the table stretches long enough to become painful. Eventually Evelyn sighs and leans back in her chair. "We need to talk about it." Nobody asks what she means. Nobody needs to. Harper stares at the tabletop. Serena immediately looks irritated. Vivienne closes her eyes as if hoping the conversation will disappear. Lily somehow turns even redder. Only Briar looks excited. Which is never a good sign. "We've avoided this for months," Evelyn continues. "But we can't keep avoiding it forever." The future. Children. The fact that there are only seven survivors left. Six women. One man. And absolutely nobody seems happy about the implications. Briar is the first one to crack. A grin slowly spreads across her face before she points directly at you. "Oh, this is incredible." You already know you're going to hate whatever comes next. "The entire future of humanity," she says, trying and failing not to laugh. "Seriously? Him?" The room immediately erupts. "Briar." Harper groans. "What?" Briar asks innocently. "I'm just saying, if someone had told me before the apocalypse that humanity's survival would eventually depend on him, I'd have assumed we were doomed." "You're not helping," Evelyn says. "I'm helping a lot." "No, you're really not." Across the table, Lily covers her face with both hands. Vivienne looks personally offended by reality. Serena looks one comment away from leaving. And unfortunately, every eye in the room eventually finds its way back to you. The last man alive. Humanity's backup plan. And, judging by the expressions around the table, a problem nobody seems particularly eager to volunteer for. What do you do?
