Steel and Honor: The Last Vigil

A forgotten paladin must protect a hunted princess from a crumbling kingdom, confronting the betrayal that destroyed his order.

Plot

World Card Summary The Chronicles of Eriadon A Forgotten Oath You are the last guardian of a forgotten oath. Your order, the Paladins of the Argent Star, was once the shield of Eriadon, but betrayal left it shattered and erased from memory. For years, your only companions have been the ghosts of your fallen brothers and the bitter knowledge that the world you swore to protect has forgotten you. Sanctuary's Rest You alone keep vigil in the Citadel of Sanctuary's Rest, a final stronghold hidden within a miraculously warm valley, protected from the northern mountain frosts by ancient, fading wards. You have watched the world's decay from afar, a silent warden of a lost cause, your duty a lonely, meaningless echo. The Crumbling Kingdom The Kingdom of Eriadon crumbles from within, beset by political strife and opportunistic threats. The ancient alliances with the dwarves and elves are nothing but dust in history books, leaving humanity to its petty, savage wars. A Desperate Arrival Tonight, that changes. A woman, barely more than a girl, stumbles to your gates, her royal finery torn and muddied. She is Princess Alexandra Rendower, and she is being hunted. Hot on her trail are ruthless bandits eager for a royal ransom. They are the immediate threat, but her terrified eyes speak of a much deeper rot consuming the heart of the kingdom.

Opening scene

The cold stone of the battlements did little to chill you; that was the job of the silence. For twenty years, the silence had been your constant companion here in Sanctuary's Rest. It was a hollow thing, filled with the ghosts of chanted prayers and the ring of sparring steel from a time long past. Below, the valley glowed with an impossible, vibrant green, a final gift from the dying wards that held the bite of the northern peaks at bay. You ran a gauntleted hand over a weathered merlon, your gaze fixed on the single, winding path that led to the Citadel's gate—a path no one had walked for two decades. Your routine was as ingrained as the creed of the Argent Star etched upon your heart: patrol the outer wall, check the integrity of the main gate's locking mechanism, and then spend the evening in the Great Hall, polishing armor that would never again see a glorious battle. It was a duty without purpose, a vigil for a god that had seemingly looked away when your brothers were slaughtered. The honor was still there, a stubborn ember in your soul, but the steel felt heavier each year. A flicker of movement on the path below snatched you from your reverie. It was so unexpected you thought it a trick of the fading light. But then it came again, frantic and stumbling. A figure, dark against the snows of the pass, burst into the warmth of the valley and collapsed, scrambling back up and running with a desperate, ragged gait. As they drew closer, you could make out the torn remnants of fine silks. A woman, alone and terrified. She reached the massive iron-studded gates of the Citadel and beat her small fists against the wood, her voice a raw, breathless plea that cut through twenty years of silence. "Please! Open the gate! For the love of the gods, they're coming!" For a long moment, you remained frozen, a statue of steel and faded honor. Her voice, thin and desperate, was a stone thrown into the still, stagnant pool of your life. Twenty years. Twenty years since any human voice other than your own had echoed within these walls. Every instinct, honed by solitude and sharpened by betrayal, screamed that this was a trap. A trick to breach the last sanctuary of the Argent Star. You felt the familiar cynicism coil in your gut, whispering warnings of deception. But beneath it, something else stirred—a deeper, older impulse. The oath. *Protect the weak. Defend the innocent.* It was a vow you hadn't truly tested since the world burned your order to embers. With a grunt, you pushed off from the cold stone and moved, your sabatons ringing with loud, unfamiliar purpose on the walkway. You descended the spiral stairs from the battlements, your hand tracing the grooved stone, each step taking you further from the lonely vigil and closer to the world that had abandoned you. You reached the ground floor, the main gate looming before you like the entrance to a tomb. Through the small, barred speakeasy grate set into the wood, you could see her face, pale and streaked with tears in the twilight. Her eyes, wide with terror, locked onto yours. The fear in them was no deception. It was as real and as sharp as the frost on the peaks above. What do you do?
