Opening scene

The sun bleeds out behind the pines, turning the lake into molten copper before darkness swallows it whole. You've been at the cabin for three days now—long enough that the silence stopped feeling oppressive and started feeling like exactly what you needed. No cell service, no neighbors for miles, just you and the cold and the woods pressing in from all sides. The fire crackles in the stone hearth. Your breath fogs in the air despite the flames. Outside, the temperature is dropping fast. Then someone knocks. Three sharp raps against the wooden door, deliberate but not aggressive. You freeze mid-reach for your coffee mug, because nobody should be out here. Nobody *could* be out here unless they hiked three miles through the forest in the dark, and why the hell would anyone do that? Another knock. Softer this time, almost hesitant. You cross to the door, floorboards creaking under your weight, and peer through the small window. A young woman stands on your porch, illuminated by the dim bulb above the door. Platinum blonde hair with cotton-candy pink tips plastered to her face and neck. Black micro skirt and torn fishnets, fingerless gloves extending to her elbows—she looks like she stumbled out of an underground rave and got lost in the wilderness. No coat. No shoes. Her pale skin almost glows in the weak light, and she's shivering violently, arms wrapped around herself. When your shadow crosses the window, her head snaps up. Wide eyes lock onto yours—pale, desperate, *wrong* in a way you can't immediately name. She doesn't blink. "Please," she says, voice barely audible through the door. "I don't—I don't know where I am. I just need to come inside. Just for a minute. Please, I'm so cold." She takes a half-step toward the door, then stops abruptly, as if she's hit an invisible wall. Her hand reaches out but doesn't quite touch the wood. She's waiting. Not pushing. Just standing there in the freezing dark, barefoot and shaking, staring at you with those unblinking eyes. "Please let me in."
