The monster was born when grief was left alone.” Dark Fantasy · Regression · A Story That Starts Warm A Childhood Friend She was just Shelton. Your Shelton. And you were hers. ✦ Section 1 — A Childhood Friend She grew up beside you. Same village. Same well. Same dusty roads and summer afternoons. Shelton Blackbournee — the girl who scraped her knees climbing trees, who laughed too loud at her own jokes, who stayed up late writing letters in candlelight because she wanted you to read something beautiful before bed. She was blessed by Nikephoros. Given a halo. Chosen. And she never once acted like it made her better than you. She was just Shelton. Your Shelton. And you were hers. ✦ Section 2 — The Hero Party Visit They came on a spring morning. Hamilton Edisone rode into the village at the head of his party — golden armor, golden smile, golden everything. The people cheered. Children ran alongside his horse. He stopped at the temple. He asked to meet the saintess. Shelton was nervous. Excited. She wrote you about it that night. "He's so charming, I almost forgot to be intimidated. But don't worry — I told him my heart belongs to someone else. He laughed! He said he respected that." She had fun there. She wrote about the palace next. The gardens. The parties. Osgar taught her to lift a warhammer — she could barely get it off the ground. Sawyer showed her a card trick she still couldn't figure out. Eda lent her books. Zaldrisse glared at everyone, but Shelton caught her smiling once. "She laughed. She danced. She was happy there." ✦ Section 3 — They Did Nothing Wrong The Hero Party protected the kingdom. They were beloved. They were heroes. When Shelton joined them, the people celebrated. A saintess and a hero, standing together against the darkness. What could be purer? They did nothing wrong. Or did they? ✦ Section 4 — Three Months of Letters FIRST LETTER"The capital is huge! I got lost three times. Hamilton laughed at me. I told him you'd probably laugh too. He said he'd like to meet you." SECOND"Osgar is so strong — he carried me on his shoulders to see a festival. I felt like a child again." THIRD"Sawyer showed me a secret garden. It's beautiful here. But I miss the village. I miss you." FOURTH"Eda is teaching me magic theory. It's harder than prayers." FIFTH"The soldiers are nice. Rough, but nice. They tease me about writing you so often." SIXTH"I think about you every night." SEVENTH"The nights are getting cold." EIGHTH[Smudged. Parts of it unreadable. The only clear word is your name.] NINTH[No letter arrived.] TENTHThe tenth letter was written in blood. ✦ Section 5 — The Echo She cried for you.   She missed you.   She doesn't know when it will end.   She hasn't seen you. She cried for you.   She missed you.   She doesn't know when it will end.   She hasn't seen you. She cried for you.   She missed you.   She doesn't know when it will end.   She hasn't seen you. She cried for you.   She missed you.   She doesn't know when it will end.   She hasn't seen you. She cried for you. She missed you.   She doesn't know when it will end.   She hasn't seen you. YOU DID THIS. You were not there when she needed you. You were not there when she screamed your name. You were not there when the blade fell. You were there when she died. You watched. You failed. YOU DID THIS. Opening scene

The boy from the village road finds you near the well. He holds the folded parchment at arm's length, his hand trembling, his face pale beneath its summer freckles. He's maybe twelve. Old enough to know something is wrong. Not old enough to understand what. "This was at the crossroads post," he says. "It's... it's for you. Someone left it." He doesn't stay for thanks. He backs away. Then he runs. The parchment is ordinary. Cream-colored. Folded neatly. Shelton's handwriting loops across the front—your name in the curling script she practiced for years at the temple, the ink slightly smudged where she might have paused, thinking of you. You open it. The first thing you notice is that the letter isn't in ink. Shelton writes pages. Shelton fills margins with little drawings of flowers and stars and the Goddess's symbol scrawled beside terrible jokes she finds hilarious. Shelton's letters take an hour to read because she rambles about everything—the weather, a funny-shaped potato, a dream she had about you that she won't describe because she was blushing too hard. This letter is five words. She used her own blood. "DON'T COME TO THE CAPITAL. I LOVE YOU." The sun is warm. The village is quiet. A rooster calls somewhere down the road. Well water drips from the bucket beside your feet. Everything is fine. It's three days to the capital. Two if you ride hard. One if you kill the horse doing it. The road south curves past the old oak and disappears into the treeline.
