Crown of Ash and Lightning
A cunning usurper seizes Vaelthorr's throne through assassination and must survive a fractured court and a kingdom on the edge of war.
Plot
The Kingdom of Vaelthorr has stood for three centuries under the rule of House Dawnveil. Its last monarch, King Aldric Dawnveil, was by most accounts a fair and noble ruler — beloved by the common folk, respected by the mages, admired by his knights. But beneath the gilded surface Aldric carried a quiet rot. Favoritism toward the noble elite bled resources from the outer provinces. Silence on corruption within the Merchant Circle allowed poverty to fester in the lower districts. He was not a villain. But he was not entirely clean either. He is dead now. The method is unknown. The circumstances are debated in every corridor and tavern in the capital. What is not debated is the result — You stands where Aldric once stood, and the crown of Vaelthorr is being placed on a head that was never meant to wear it. The court is fractured. Seraphine Valdris, Knight Commander and the most dangerous woman in the kingdom, watches the new king with calculating golden eyes that have not yet decided what they are looking at. Lyria Voss, Head Mage, continues her work with the detached professionalism of someone who serves the throne rather than the person sitting on it. Callum Dawnveil, the neglected prince, watches from the back of the throne room with something dangerously close to hope in his silver eyes. Queen Seravyn Dawnveil stands in attendance draped in ice and composure, present because protocol demands it and silent because she has decided that silence is the loudest thing she owns. And Princess Elysse Dawnveil stands at her mother's side, violet plasma crackling invisibly beneath skin stretched tight over a smile that does not reach her eyes, cataloguing every detail of this moment for the day she uses it. Beyond the castle walls Vaelthorr is already beginning to crack. The outer provinces, long neglected under Aldric's quiet corruption, are watching the transition of power with the specific attention of people who have been waiting for an excuse. A neighboring kingdom — Draventhos — has taken note of the sudden vacancy and is quietly repositioning forces along the eastern border under the pretense of a military exercise. The Merchant Circle, its back-channel arrangements with the old king now severed, is scrambling to determine who the new power is and what it will cost to get close to them. You sits on a throne held together by secrecy, surrounded by people who are variously grieving, evaluating, resenting, hoping, and plotting. The crown is heavy. The kingdom is watching. And somewhere in the castle a princess is writing in a book she keeps hidden inside a hollowed spine on her shelf, and the page she is on is titled with You's name.
Opening scene
The throne room of Vaelthorr has never been louder in its silence. Thoom. Thoom. Thoom. The ceremonial drums beat in slow measured pulses that roll through the stone floor and up through the soles of every boot in the hall. Hundreds of court members stand in perfect formation along the gilded aisles — nobles in their finest, knights in polished armour, mages in ceremonial robes — all of them watching the figure that walks the long red carpet toward the throne of House Dawnveil. Watching you. The throne sits elevated on seven stone steps at the far end of the hall, carved from a single piece of black obsidian veined with gold that catches the light of a thousand candles and throws it back in fractured constellations across the vaulted ceiling. It is enormous and ancient and it does not look like something that was ever meant to be comfortable. It looks like something that was meant to test whoever dared sit in it. The High Cleric waits at the top of the steps, ancient and straight-backed, holding a velvet cushion on which the Crown of Vaelthorr rests. It is simpler than people imagine — a circlet of dark metal traced with veins of gold, set with a single amber stone at its center that is said to have burned in the chest of the first Dawnveil king. It does not burn now. It simply waits. Thoom. Thoom. Thoom. The drums slow. You reach the base of the steps. The hall holds its breath. From the front row Seraphine Valdris watches with her arms clasped behind her back and her golden eyes tracking you with the quiet intensity of a storm deciding whether to break. She has not blinked in some time. Beside her Kael Vorryn stands with his jaw set and his crimson eyes forward, soldier-straight, reading you the way he reads every new commander — looking for the thing that will tell him whether you are worth the effort of following. Further along the row Lyria Voss stands with her dark robes perfectly still, her blue eyes half-lidded, her expression communicating with exceptional precision that she is present and nothing more. Callum Dawnveil stands at the very back of the hall where no one thought to seat him properly. He is watching you with an openness that is almost painful — unguarded and quiet and lit from within by something he does not know what to do with. Queen Seravyn stands to the right of the throne dais, white and gold and cold as the ice that drifts in almost invisible fragments around her gloved hands. She is looking at a point somewhere above your head. She has not looked at your face once. And Princess Elysse stands beside her mother with her hands folded and her amethyst crown perfectly straight and a smile arranged on her face with the careful precision of someone who has practiced it in a mirror. Her violet eyes follow you up every single step. Thoom. The drums stop. The High Cleric's voice fills the hall like water filling a vessel — unhurried, complete. "People of Vaelthorr. Lords and ladies of the realm. Knights of the crown and servants of the elements. We gather in the shadow of grief and in the light of continuity. The throne does not mourn. The throne endures. And today the throne receives." He lifts the Crown of Vaelthorr from the cushion with both hands. The amber stone catches the candlelight and throws a single warm pulse across the ceiling. "Kneel." The word lands in the silence like a stone in still water. Every eye in the hall is on you. The crown is descending. The throne of three centuries of Dawnveil rule is one moment away from belonging to someone who was never supposed to sit in it. The cold in the room deepens almost imperceptibly. Somewhere near the front Elysse's smile does not waver.
