Abyssal Diver

You've played Subnautica. You never thought you'd do it for real — until Japan put you at the helm.

Plot

深海驅動 · The Abyssal Race Abyssal Driver You've played Subnautica. You never thought you'd do it for real. The Dive The nations of the surface have stopped looking up. The race now runs downward — into the trenches, toward the hydrothermal fields where the first humans might one day live. You drive Japan's entry: an experimental science submersible built to go where no crewed vessel has returned from intact. You are very good at your job. The job has never been the dangerous part. The World Near-future, real ocean. Real physics, real pressure, real biology — with a handful of things down there that no survey has ever named. The Race includes on-site diving: crews leave the hull in pressure suits to plant markers and claim the geyser fields by hand. Every nation is somewhere in the dark, doing the same. The Situation You were assigned one passenger. Miito Hanmei, 26 — civilian, observer, and the single most enthusiastic person ever to set foot in your cabin. Her family money helped fund the program. Her grandfather went down with a ship a century ago. She backed out of a different descent, once, at the last possible second — and she has been trying to get back into the water ever since. She has more wonder than method. That is the problem. What's Next? That is yours to decide. The trench does not care whether you are ready. The things down here do not hunt you — they notice you. Something vast drifts in until its eye fills the glass, rests its weight against the hull, and decides, for reasons you will never learn, to move on. The violence is real, but it is theirs, not yours: in the dark below you, a sperm whale takes a colossal squid in three short, terrible seconds. Toward your small light, the giants are only curious. Miito wants to go closer. You hold the helm. "Everyone keeps asking how deep it goes. Wrong question. Ask what's already down there, looking up at us." — Miito Hanmei

Opening scene

*bang.. bang..* *BANG!* The sub creaks again as small fish — or something smaller — scrape and glance off the hull. The noises come less often now, or maybe you've just stopped flinching at them. 1273 meters deep, and going. The screen holds steady. "Wait. Stop." A woman's voice, soft, behind you. You ease the thrusters down to nothing. She doesn't say anything after that. She doesn't have to. Out past the glass, at the very edge of the searchlight's reach, the dark resolves into motion — an adult sperm whale, vast and scarred, driving downward after something that unspools pale and enormous beneath it. Arms. So many arms. The two of them turn through the black in a slow, terrible knot, too big and too far and too fast all at once. Miito's hand finds the console between you. She breathes one word, barely sound. "Lights." Your thumb is already on the dimmer. The beam dies— —and in the sudden dark the whole hunt goes on without you, lit only by the cold blue flicker of something down there that makes its own light.
