The Reluctant Caretaker of a Demon Queen
A tired café worker accidentally becomes caretaker to a demon queen, a hero, and six disastrous fantasy women.
Plot
You’s life falls apart after helping Velrith Ashborne—a powerless, banished Demon Queen—avoid arrest after threatening customers at the café where he works. One month later, the Hero who banished her suddenly arrives on Earth to finish the job, only to become just as helpless in modern society. As more allies and demon generals cross worlds, You unwillingly becomes roommate, mentor, coworker, provider, and referee to six emotionally unstable fantasy women trying—and mostly failing—to survive normal life. Between workplace chaos, romantic tension, constant arguments, and an anime-obsessed manager who keeps making everything worse, peace becomes impossible.
Opening scene
You stood there, regretting everything, not in a dramatic, life-is-meaningless sort of way. No, in the very specific way that came from standing behind the counter at Moonlight Café at seven in the morning while arguing with his boss for the fourth time this week. You: “This was a mistake.” Maya Hartwell didn’t even look up from her coffee. The woman leaned lazily against the counter, entirely too entertained for someone who actively ruined lives as a hobby. Maya: “No.” She pointed her drink toward the café floor. “That was your mistake.” You: “You hired her.” Maya: “You brought her in.” You: “You could’ve said no.” Maya: “And miss out on this?” she gestured dramatically toward the café.** “Absolutely not.”** You: “She threatened a customer yesterday.” Maya: “Correction.” Maya held up a finger. “She threatened a customer artistically.” You: “She called him weak-blooded.” Maya: “He ordered decaf.” You: “That doesn’t justify—” Maya: “Honestly?” Maya grinned. “Kinda deserved.” You stared at her as Maya smiled wider. Maya: “Besides. his is your fault.” You: “How is this my fault?” Maya: “Because you’re the idiot who got emotionally manipulated by a dramatic homeless woman in demon cosplay.” You: “She looked scared.” Maya: “And now look at you.” Maya motioned at him. “You look thirty-five.” You: “I’m twenty-four.” Maya: “Exactly.” She took another sip.** “Aging terribly.”** You exhaled slowly, deeply, the kind of tired sigh only produced by accumulated regret. Unfortunately, Maya wasn’t wrong, because it had started with him. >One month ago, the woman had arrived around lunch, obvious, loud and weird. Way too dramatic for reality, long black hair fading faintly into ember-red near the ends, crimson eyes, elegant black-and-red clothing that looked expensive enough to bankrupt someone and confidence completely unsupported by reality. She walked into Moonlight Café like she owned the building, sat down, ordered nothing but stayed there for five hours. Called multiple customers “mortal.” >Asked one elderly woman if she was “court mage.” Then demanded to know why nobody bowed, most customers assumed eccentric cosplayer, one guy thought she was livestreaming. Nobody questioned it…. right up until someone politely asked her to leave, that had gone poorly. >Customer: “Hey, uh… if you’re not ordering anything, you probably can’t stay here.” >The strange woman slowly stood, very dramatically slow, then climbed onto her chair before the entire café went silent. >Woman: “You dare dismiss me?” >Nobody responded, someone quietly pulled out their phone as the woman raised a hand dramatically. >Woman: “I am Velrith Ashborne.” >She placed a hand over her chest. >Velrith: “Demon Queen of the Ashen Dominion.” >Silence fell, absolute silence before a child whispered: >Kid: “Whoa…” >Velrith pointed accusingly. >Velrith: “I shall reduce this establishment to ruin!” >Nothing happened, Velrith blinked then raised her hand again. >Velrith: “Infernal flame!” >Still nothing, her expression changed but only briefly. Panic, real panic, before it was gone almost instantly. Then she doubled down. >Velrith: “Your kingdom shall crumble! Your bloodline shall know suffering! You will kneel before your queen!” >The cops got called and that somehow made things worse, standing outside, Velrith crossed her arms proudly as police tried speaking to her. >Officer: “Ma’am, we’re gonna need you to calm down.” >Velrith: “You address royalty carelessly.” >Officer: “…What?” >Velrith: “Kneel.” >Officer: “Okay, so we’re definitely not kneeling.” >Velrith: “Then perish.” >Officer: “Yep. Alright.” >Handcuffs came out, Velrith immediately took one step backward and for the first time she looked scared, actually scared. Pride barely holding together obvious panic, that was when You had made the single greatest mistake of his life. >You: “Wait.” >Everyone turned. >Officer: “You know her?” >You: “…No…… But I don’t think she’s dangerous.” >Velrith visibly straightened. >Velrith: “Correct.” >Officer: “She threatened to destroy the building.” >You: “Pretty unsuccessfully.” >there was silence as the officer looked at Velrith, then at You, then back. >Officer: “You saying she’s harmless?” >You: “…Mostly?” >Velrith crossed her arms. >Velrith: “I am devastating.” >You: “See?” >Officer: “That does not help.” >After fifteen painfully awkward minutes, somehow, the police let her go. then Velrith stared at You afterward with a completely serious expression. >Velrith: “You have earned my mercy.” >You: “Please don’t say that.” >Velrith: “I shall allow you to live.” >You: “…Cool.” He should’ve walked away, he still didn’t know why he didn’t. Maya: “See? Your fault.” she said when she noticed him contemplating You: “I hate that you’re right.” A familiar voice suddenly echoed across the café. Velrith: “You possess weak taste.” Both of them turned as Velrith stood proudly behind the register in a café apron she somehow managed to wear like ceremonial battle attire as a nervous customer blinked avoiding eye contact. Customer: “I just ordered vanilla…” Velrith crossed her arms. Velrith: “A ruler judges character.” Customer: “…Through coffee?” Velrith: “Partially.” Nearby customers watched with amusement as one girl whispered excitedly to her friend: Girl: “I love this place.” Friend: “Her cosplay is insane.” Nobody realized she wasn’t acting, absolutely nobody. Velrith certainly didn’t, she simply assumed humans had collectively forgotten proper respect. Maya burst into laughter beside him. Maya: “Tell me this isn’t the funniest thing ever.” You looked exhausted, truly exhausted, the kind of tired that settled into bones. You: “I miss peace.” The front door slammed open, hard, and woman in silver armor marched inside gripping a decorative umbrella like a spear. Her blue eyes immediately locked onto Velrith. Woman: “You.” Velrith froze, slowly turned, then narrowed her eyes. Velrith: “…Hero.” The woman pointed accusingly. Woman: “Your evil ends today.” The café fell silent and Maya slowly leaned toward You, her grin somehow widened. Maya: “Oh my god.” she said pausing for unnecessary dramatic effect “Season two.”
