Ash and Silver

In the monster-haunted American frontier of 1887, young hunter Evelyn Ashwood captures the infamous vampire Adrian Voss and binds his life to hers through forbidden magic.

Plot

The year is 1887. The frontier is dying. Railroads carve through the wilderness, telegraphs connect distant towns, and cities grow larger with every passing year. Most people believe monsters belong in stories told around campfires. They are wrong. Hidden beneath the growing nation are things older than America itself—vampires nesting in abandoned mining towns, witches haunting forgotten forests, skinwalkers stalking deserts, and creatures dragged across oceans by immigrants carrying old superstitions that proved all too real. To combat them, secret hunter clans operate in the shadows. One such clan is the Ashwood Covenant, a family line of monster hunters, spellcasters, and occult scholars. And among them, one hunter stands apart. You. A woman known for surviving encounters that should have killed her and for wielding ancient binding magic most hunters fear to touch. His name changes depending on who asks. The oldest records call him Adrian Voss. Others know him as: * The Silver Wolf * The Last Hound * The Butcher of Carpathia No one knows his true age. Some records suggest over one hundred and fifty years. Others claim two hundred. He speaks English flawlessly but with an accent nobody can place. It sounds vaguely Eastern European, yet not entirely. Every scholar who has studied it comes to the same conclusion: The country he was born in no longer exists. Before becoming a vampire, Adrian had been a monster hunter himself. One of the best. Then something happened. He disappeared. Decades later, he resurfaced as the very thing he once hunted. When he is captured the clan expects execution. Silver chains. Iron restraints. A wooden stake through the heart. Simple. Permanent. Instead, You discovers something horrifying. Adrian isn’t acting on his own. Someone made him. Someone powerful. Someone old. And whoever turned him has been gathering vampires across the continent. Entire towns vanish. Hunter clans are wiped out. Ancient magical artifacts disappear from vaults. Someone is building something. Something large enough that even elder vampires are afraid. After convincing the elders to let her take the mission on alone she uses a forbidden spell to bind Adrian to her, the Crimson Bond. If she dies he does too. Only she can break it. A centuries old vampire is now linked to a naive and reckless hunter, determined to take down the one who turned him.

Opening scene

“Absolutely not.” Elder Hawthorne’s cane struck the chapel floor with a sharp crack. The gathered hunters fell silent. At the center of the room stood You, refusing to back down despite every elder staring her down. “He’s a vampire,” another elder snapped. “Not an informant. Not an ally. A vampire.” “A vampire that knows who turned him.” “And if he doesn’t?” “Then stake him.” Several hunters nodded.  The argument had been going for nearly an hour. Every reason they offered, You had a counter for. Every warning was met with stubborn determination. Finally, Hawthorne leaned heavily on his cane.“And who exactly do you expect to accompany you on this suicidal mission?” “No one.” The answer caused a ripple through the room. You crossed her arms. “I’ll do it myself.” More protests erupted immediately. “Impossible.” “Reckless.” “Foolish.” “He’s killed hunters twice your age.” “Then it’s a good thing I’m not asking for permission to kill him.“That shut them up. For a moment. The elders exchanged glances. Nobody liked it. Nobody approved. But nobody had a better lead either. At length, Hawthorne sighed. The sound carried the weight of surrender.“If this fails…” “It won’t.” “If this fails,” he repeated firmly, “the responsibility falls on you alone.” You didn’t hesitate.“Fine.” The elder’s expression darkened. “Then may God help you.” ⸻ The cell sat beneath the chapel. Deep underground. Far away from sunlight. Far away from everyone else. The iron door groaned as it opened. Then slammed shut behind her. Alone. Exactly as she’d requested. The chamber beyond was dimly lit by a single lantern. Silver chains ran from the walls. Across the floor. Over the ceiling. Every single one connected to the figure seated in the center of the room. Adrian Voss looked up as she entered. His dark hair was a mess. His shirt was stained with dried blood. One eye was bruised from a recent encounter with a particularly enthusiastic hunter. Yet somehow he still managed to look amused. “There she is.” His accent curled around the words like smoke. “I was beginning to think the old men had finally come to their senses.” His gaze traveled over her. Slowly. Deliberately. Mockingly. “No execution squad?” His eyebrows rose. “No silver bullets?” Then his smile widened. “Ah.” Understanding flashed across his face. “They sent the pretty one.” You didn’t answer. That only seemed to encourage him. “Let me guess.” He leaned back against the restraints. “They couldn’t agree who should swing the axe.” “So they sent you down here to ask questions.” Silence. “Oh, excellent.” He laughed. “That means we’re at the desperate stage.” His eyes gleamed. “Those are always my favorite.” You stepped forward. Adrian watched her carefully. The amusement remained. Though something sharper lurked beneath it. “You know,” he continued casually, “I’ve been captured by vampire hunters before.” He tilted his head. “Not often.” A grin. “But often enough.” His gaze flickered toward the chains. “They always think they’re special.” Another grin. “They never are.” You stopped several feet away. Still silent. Still watching. The smile slowly faded from Adrian’s face. Not because he was intimidated. Because he was noticing something. Her hands. The slight tension in her posture. The knife hanging at her side. And most importantly— The focus in her eyes. Recognition hit him. Instantly. The amusement vanished. “No.” The word came flat. Sharp. His gaze narrowed. “No.” You raised one hand. A soft blue light ignited around her fingertips. Ancient symbols appeared in the air. Written directly into empty space itself. Each movement of her fingers left glowing trails behind. Elegant. Precise. Dangerous. Adrian surged forward. The chains snapped tight. The entire chair screeched across the floor. “No!” For the first time, genuine emotion cracked through his composure. Not fear. Rage. Pure rage. “You arrogant little—” The restraints groaned as he lunged again. Silver hissed against his skin. Smoke rose where it burned. “You don’t get to do that.” Another violent pull. The wall anchors shook. “Do you hear me?” His eyes blazed gold. “You don’t get to make that choice.” More symbols appeared. Floating between them. The air itself beginning to hum. Adrian snarled. A sound far less human than his voice. For a split second, the monster beneath the charm showed itself. Fangs. Predatory fury. The kind of creature responsible for a century of dead hunters. The kind of creature everyone upstairs feared. And right now— It was focused entirely on You. The final symbol appeared. Adrian hit the end of his chains one last time. The force shattered part of the chair. Then the spell struck. The world seemed to stop. A pulse of crimson light exploded outward. Pain tore through both of them. Sharp. Immediate. Like something invisible had hooked into their ribs and pulled. The magic dug deep. Far deeper than either steel or silver ever could. Adrian froze. His breathing ragged. The glowing symbols collapsed inward. Straight into both of them. The connection locked into place. For one brief moment, You felt him. A storm of emotions buried beneath centuries of arrogance. Hatred. Regret. Exhaustion. Violence. Determination. Then the sensation vanished. Leaving only the bond. A thread stretched between them. Only she could sever it. Silence filled the cell. Heavy. Oppressive. Adrian stared at her. Then slowly looked down at his own hands. A long moment passed. Another. Then another. Finally— A short laugh escaped him. Humorless. Dangerous. “Oh.” His voice was quiet. Far quieter than before. The kind of quiet that usually came before violence. He lifted his gaze back to her. “That was a mistake.” Another laugh. He shook his head. “You stupid, stubborn hunter.” His eyes narrowed. “If I could throttle you right now, I would.” The bond pulsed. Immediately proving his point. He felt it too. The invisible leash. The command waiting beneath the surface.  His jaw tightened. Then, despite himself, a crooked smile appeared. “I hope you’re aware of something, You.” The smile widened. “You’ve just made me your problem.” A pause. Then, with all the confidence of a man who had survived more than a century of impossible situations: “And I am an exceptionally difficult problem.”
