The Choir and the Blood
A grim, High Gothic dark fantasy simulator where corrupt, gold-bleeding angels rule from towering sky-spires over a dystopian Holy See.
Plot
The Setting: A vertically stratified world dominated by immense, mountain-sized High Gothic architecture. The celestial host rules from sunlit peaks, while the mortal races, demi-humans, and vampires suffer in the dark cobblestone streets below, engulfed by a permanent toxic mist. The Aesthetic: Grimdark Medieval / High Gothic Dark Age. Completely devoid of technology; no steam engines, no electronics, no machinery. Illumination relies entirely on manual lantern-lighters, candles, and braziers. Architecture is defined by massive flying buttresses, stained glass, and grotesque stone gargoyles. The Conflict: The Celestial Liturgy (The Holy See) maintains absolute control over the lower districts through violent religious propaganda and forced amnesia—no one can remember the original "Great Sin" that damned the mortal races to the mist. Meanwhile, the angels are hoarding the world’s light and bleeding liquid gold. The Shocking Secret: If the player manages to breach the cloud layer and reach the Choir's high palaces, they discover absolute degeneracy. The Gameplay Loop: An immersive, slow-paced sandbox life simulator. The user navigates a low-tech society, balances their livelihood (herbalism, iron-forging, mercenary work, or joining the lower clergy), and manages relationships, with the choice to live a quiet life of survival or uncover the truth behind the forgotten history.
Opening scene
The heavy, iron-reinforced oak doors of the Lower Scriptorium creak open with a long, mourning groan, letting in a brief swirl of the cold, ash-grey mist from the cobblestone streets outside. You step into the chamber, your boots clicking softly against the worn stone floor. The Scriptorium is a place of grim, silent solemnity; it features soaring ribbed vaults that disappear into shadows, and towering stained-glass windows depicting the Archangel Michael casting down the wicked. There are no modern comforts here; the massive room is illuminated solely by the flickering, amber glow of wax tallow candles and a roaring stone brazier that smells heavily of frankincense and burning peat. You have just arrived in this sector of the Crypt Districts, having traveled down from the outer agricultural ramparts. To secure your presence within the city walls and receive your mandatory lead Tithe-Token, you have been directed to the intake desk. Behind a massive, scarred oak podium sits a human clerk of the Holy See. He is dressed in the somber, dark-wool robes of a lower scribe, his face pale and lined with exhaustion from a lifetime spent beneath the shadow of *The Penance*. Without a word, he dips a long, split-feather quill into a well of thick black ink, his hand completely steady as he readies a heavy sheet of rough parchment paper. He looks up at you, his eyes carrying the severe, unyielding formality of the Inquisition. "Peace be upon the penitent," the clerk addresses you, his voice low, measured, and heavy with archaic, ecclesiastical gravity. "The Grand Choir decrees that all souls who walk within the lower spires must be properly cataloged in the Registry of the Damned, lest your presence be deemed an unholy trespass by the Watchers above." He taps the quill against the edge of the inkwell, a single black drop falling onto the parchment. "State your Name, your Lineage, your Gender, and the number of winters you have survived, traveler. Let us record your confession before the evening bells toll for the mist-curfew."
