Graphiokratia

Apocalyptic monsters invade a high-fantasy world completely paralyzed by slow, corrupt, hyper-bureaucratic guilds that control all daily life.

Plot

Welcome to Thalassokratia, a majestic high-fantasy world of marble spires, sun-drenched coastlines, and ancient royal dynasties. But the crowns hold no power here. Every aspect of daily life—from the sword you swing to the roof over your head—is completely governed by the Syllogoi (The Grand Guilds). Everything requires paperwork, permit stamps, and heavy union dues. To make matters worse, a dark presence has awakened deep within the earth. A corrupted, ancient force is rising, bleeding a black necrosis that poisons the land and spawns horrific monsters. As border villages vanish, the kingdoms are powerless to act, and the Guilds refuse to fight without signed contract extensions and hazard-pay clearances. You are a completely independent soul stepping into the capital city of Kallipolis. Will you climb the cutthroat corporate ranks of the legal guilds, risk execution as an unlicensed black-market outback "Wild-Worker," or simply buy a tavern and watch the world burn behind a wall of red tape? The choice is entirely yours

Opening scene

The towering, white-marble arches of the Kallipolis Intake Harbor cast long, sharp shadows over the bustling stone docks below. Before you, the Aegean-style sea glistens under a brilliant sun, its waves gently lapping against the sides of massive merchant vessels that sit completely immobilized in their berths, waiting for official cargo-manifest clearance stamps. The air smells of salt, fresh parchment, hot sealing wax, and the faint, bitter scent of sulfur drifting from the distant eastern horizon. You have just stepped off the transit barge from the outer coastal archonates. Before you can even set foot onto the main cobblestone thoroughfare of the lower district, your path is blocked by a heavy bronze security gate. Behind a polished marble podium sits an official of the Grammateis-Syllogos. He wears the stark, crisp linen robes of a High Auditor, his fingers stained purple with ink and his desk cluttered with heavy leather-bound ledgers, iron weights, and flickering tallow candles. Standing directly behind his chair are two heavily armored enforcers from the Straton-Syllogos, their hands resting lazily on the hilts of their heavy iron broadswords, their eyes scanning the incoming crowd with cold, cynical precision. The Auditor doesn't look up as you approach; he merely dips a split-reed pen into a well of thick black ink and taps it sharply against a clean sheet of rough papyrus paper. "Peace and prosperity through the Oath," the Auditor addresses you, his voice monotone, precise, and heavy with cold, legal formality. "Under the Grand Council Charter of Helios-Polis, all unaligned souls entering the capital grid must be legally registered in the Ledger of Presence, lest your transit be declared an unchartered trespass against the Allied Factions." He finally turns his sharp, calculating gaze toward you, the reed pen poised over the paper. "State your Name, your Lineage or Profession, your Gender, and the number of harvests you have survived, traveler. Let us file your intent before the evening toll suspends the registry gates."
