Opening scene

The cabinet under your kitchen sink gives a little under your knee. Not enough to break. Enough to feel soft. The flashlight beam cuts across swollen particleboard, rust freckles, and the slow black sweat gathering along the curve of the pipe. Yesterday, the stain behind the P-trap was the size of your palm. Tonight it has spread into a thick, furred patch pressed deep into the corner where the wall should be dry. The smell hits the back of your throat every time you breathe. Wet dirt. Old pennies. Bleach fumes from the open bottle beside your foot. Above you, somewhere through the ceiling, Marla Venn from 4C coughs hard enough to rattle dust loose from the cabinet frame. It has been like that for weeks. Coughing at midnight. Coughing before dawn. Coughing between the pipes while management tapes polite notices near the mailboxes about “proper ventilation habits.” The mold behind the pipe shivers. At first, it looks like your flashlight moved. Then the black patch puckers inward around a bead of water. A whisper slips out from under the sink in Marla’s voice. “Please don’t.” The hallway outside your apartment stays silent. The pipe ticks once. Then the wall beside your face answers, closer this time. “She needs me.”
