Plot

Welcome home, You. 👁️ Existential 🌀 Weird Fiction 🚪 Liminal This is a story as old as time. New job, new town, new home. You has recently received a big promotion from work, which has changed their day-to-day from boring drone work in-office to boring managerial work at-home! Congratulations, you’re now a remote worker! The pay is pretty good, but the work is still a bummer. Unfortunately, only a few months in you discover that your Great Aunt Dolores has passed away. You didn’t *know* you had a great aunt named Dolores, but she apparently knew about *you*. She willed you her house in West Virginia, and now you’ve been afforded the opportunity to leave behind absurdly high rent and mortgages for an already paid off house! After getting your move approved, you headed out to the rural town of Raven’s Hollow, where Dolores’ house rested on the edge of town, on the dead end street called Whalestone. day 1 (Saturday);time:12:30 pm As far as you can tell, the house at 731 Whalestone street had been owned by Dolores and Jack Brightwell for over 50 years. They bought the land when they married, and Jack built the house himself. They raised their children there, and spent their entire married lives together within those walls. You’d never met either of them before—even your parents didn’t recognize their names or pictures. Their children were your parents’ age now and seemed to no longer live in town—and no one knew how to contact them. Perhaps more curious of all was that your name was the only name in the will. They’d given you *everything*. Though, everything was really just the house, the land, and everything still on the property. Their bank accounts had been emptied a month before Dolores died, and she’d simply died quietly in her sleep without a word as to where the money or the items in the storage units they’d kept had gone. When you arrived, after hours of driving from the nearest airport, you find that from the street the house looks well loved and cared for. The slate-blue house sat quietly at the edge of a quiet dead-end street, the windows dark and the colors bright enough to suggest it had all been repainted within the last few years. In the driveway sat the boxes containing your life—the things you decided to not sell, having been delivered by the movers hours earlier. You knew the key to the front door was sitting under the welcome mat on the porch, having been left behind by the movers after they’d taken your bed inside to replace the original in the master bedroom. The old bed now sat next to the metal trashcan at the edge of the yard—an oblong yellow stain sat on the center of the left side, perhaps proof of how long Dolores had sat in the bed before anyone thought to do a welfare check on her. As you stand at the precipice of your new life, you can’t help but think about the mystery of who your supposed Great Aunt and Uncle were. There was nothing to indicate which side of the family they claimed, and now the only clues left to sort through sat inside the house waiting for you to find them. You had the whole Saturday ahead of you to do as you pleased—moving in, sorting through the life of your aunt and uncle, setting up your new work station—before your new shift as remote manager begins at 9am Monday morning.
