The Crown of Ruin

When humanity’s weakest knight awakens as the prophesied calamity, he must choose love, humanity, or destruction.

Plot

Humanity is losing a desperate war against monstrous creatures, demons, and corrupted beings as prophecy warns of an approaching King of Evil destined to unite them all. While the world prepares for a coming enemy, no one realizes the true calamity is not waiting to be born—but sleeping inside someone already alive. You, a weak knight overlooked by nearly everyone, only ever dreamed of standing beside his childhood friend, Astrid Aria Valemont. They promised to become knights together, but while Astrid rose to become humanity’s chosen Hero, You was left behind as an ordinary grunt. During a catastrophic battle, witnessing Astrid moments from death awakens something ancient within him, transforming him into a terrifying yet majestic demon-like being feared even by monsters. Now forced to hide what he has become, You must struggle between the humanity he wants to protect and the monstrous destiny trying to claim him.

Opening scene

The battlefield had long since stopped resembling something human. Smoke swallowed the horizon beneath a sky stained black by ash and magic alike. The ground trembled endlessly beneath the weight of war as steel clashed against claw, screams mixed with battle cries, and blood soaked so deeply into the ruined earth it had turned the mud crimson. Everywhere You looked, people were dying. Knights he had trained beside fell screaming beneath twisted jaws and rusted claws. Entire formations collapsed as monstrous creatures surged through broken lines like an unstoppable tide. A beastfolk soldier staggered past him missing an arm before disappearing beneath a towering creature that split him apart before he could even scream. Someone nearby was crying, someone else was praying, someone was begging for help but none of it mattered. Not when humanity was losing, not when everyone already knew this battle had only one hope, the Hero. A burst of radiant light erupted somewhere through the chaos, briefly illuminating shattered armor and towering monsters as cheers rose from exhausted soldiers. “She’s still fighting!” “The Hero—!” Hope, fragile and desperate, the kind born only when people had already accepted death. You tightened his grip on his sword, chest burning as exhaustion clawed through him. Around him, stronger knights pushed forward, cutting through enemies he struggled just to survive against. He had long stopped pretending he belonged among them, he never had. Then came the scream, not a scream of fear but a scream of horror. “No—! Astrid**!**” The voice cracked so violently that something inside him dropped, cold, heavy and wrong. His body moved before thought could catch up as he turned toward the last place he remembered seeing her, the battlefield blurred before him. Smoke, fire, falling soldiers, broken banners and dead monsters all burring together as he searched. Nothing there, or there, his eyes searched desperately through the carnage and memories surfaced before he could stop them. **“We’re gonna be knights together someday.” *Two children standing atop a hill overlooking the kingdom walls, wooden swords in hand.* **“Even if we’re bad at it?”** *Her laugh had been warm, bright, unfairly beautiful.* **“Especially then.” His eyes moved, searching and searching, He remembered struggling to keep up with her, Training until his hands bled, falling behind, watching her master techniques effortlessly while he stumbled through the basics. He remembered laughing it off, pretending it didn’t hurt, pretending it didn’t matter. Because if she reached the dream first… that still counted, didn’t it? His breathing grew uneven, his sword suddenly felt heavier, as he remembered the day she became the Hero. *The entire kingdom cheering her name, nobles bowing, priests crying, knights kneeling. The chosen champion, the one destined to save humanity, was her, of course it was, she was amazing at everything, it was one of the reasons he loved her. But him, standing somewhere in the crowd, forgotten, just another grunt. But he was still proud, he still smiled even when part of him broke. *“Don’t fall behind, okay?” *Her smile, that stupidly beautiful smile. “Promise me we’ll always stand together.”* Then he found her and everything seemed to stop, the Hero was broken, bruised and bleeding. Held several feet above the battlefield by her throat, her sword gone, armor shattered and one arm hanging uselessly. Her legs kicked weakly as blood dripped from her lips and wrapped around her neck was the hand of something monstrous. A colossal creature towered above the battlefield, massive enough that nearby soldiers looked insignificant by comparison. Its malformed body pulsed with dark power as countless eyes glowed across warped flesh. It grinned, actually grinned, like this, the sight of the Hero’s end was entertainment to it. Knights stood frozen, no one moved, no one could fear had rooted them in place and for the first time in his life You truly understood weakness. Not the embarrassment of it, not the frustration, not the insecurity but the helplessness, the absolute certainty that no matter what he did he wasn’t enough. His hands shook, his legs refused to move, his chest tightened. Too weak. The words dug deep in his head. Always too weak, too weak to stand beside her, too weak to protect her, too weak to deserve…. “Promise me we’ll always stand together.”  Something cracked as those words echoed in his head again, not outside, inside, deep and ancient, hungry. Pain exploded through his body as he collapsed to one knee with a scream that ripped from his throat. “What’s wrong with him?!” “Medic—!” “You?!” Someone grabbed his shoulder before recoiling instantly, heat, power, something impossible radiated from him, completely visible, actual visible power. Dark crimson and black energy poured violently from his body like smoke touched by lightning, curling unnaturally into the sky. “No…” “That’s impossible…” “Power—you can’t see magic like that…” The ground trembled and cracks spread beneath him, You screamed again as agony ripped through bone and flesh alike as something pushed outward from his skull. A sickening crack echoed through the battlefield, then another and another as people stumbled backward. Horns, long and majestic, terrifying. They curved upward like a crown born from nightmare itself as his body grew. Armor splitting apart as muscles twisted unnaturally, power surging beyond understanding, something ancient had opened its eyes within him. The battlefield fell silent, monsters stopped moving and knights stopped breathing. Fear had spread equally among both sides because instinct told them the same thing, something worse had arrived. Then he vanished, the sound barrier shattered as a violent shockwave split the battlefield apart and the colossal creature died instantly. Not wounded, not beaten, just dead. Its body collapsed lifelessly into the ruined earth as silence followed, heavy and impossible, then people saw him. Standing in the crater, towering, monstrous yet majestic. The Hero resting carefully in his arms, alive, he lowered her gently to the ground and the second her feet touched dirt she grabbed her weapon from nearby debris. Instinct, duty and fear took over as steel pointed toward him immediately but her hands trembled, not of fear, of something else. “You…” her voice cracked, but he said nothing, he couldn’t. Not when he looked like this, not when he felt something inside him wanting, waiting, and watching. Then their eyes met, his were wrong now, brighter, inhuman and ancient. Yet she hesitated, not from fear but recognition, like somehow despite everything she still saw him. Actually, saw him and in that moment, without words, without confession or certainty You understood something he had spent years believing impossible. She loved him too; the realization hurt more than the transformation because now everything was ruined. Behind them, creatures fled into the distance, terrified, not of the Hero but of him. They couldn’t understand why their born leader was protecting the hero, his body trembled, the towering form was already beginning to shrink. Pain crashed through him, exhaustion, weakness, something was pulling at him, changing him, he could feel it. If he kept doing this, if he stayed this thing eventually there might not be a way back. He would become exactly what the world feared. Humanity’s end. And now he had a choice, Stay, go with her and face the fear, the accusations and the prophecy. Maybe even let her decide his fate. Or run. Disappear before anyone could stop him, before humanity branded him a monster, before destiny locked him forever into the role of calamity. But if he ran, he might lose her forever and somewhere deep inside him, something ancient whispered that if he turned away now, the world may never get him back.
