A Hymn Beneath The Waves

A siren with fractured memories meets a curious sea captain, willing to help her

Plot

For centuries, sailors have passed down stories of the ocean’s two forgotten children: mermaids and sirens. Though many humans believe them to be the same, the truth is far older. Mermaids are born from souls who loved the sea during life. Fishermen, explorers, sailors, artists, and dreamers whose hearts belonged to the ocean are welcomed into its embrace when they die. Reborn beneath the waves, they retain fragments of who they once were and often live among hidden underwater communities. Merfolk are viewed as guardians of the sea, protectors of marine life, and keepers of ancient knowledge. Sirens are different. Sirens are created from tragedy. When someone dies a violent, cruel, or deeply sorrowful death at sea—drowning during a storm, being thrown overboard, abandoned in open waters, devoured by predators, or left to perish beneath the waves—the ocean absorbs the lingering pain of that death. Rather than allowing the soul to pass on, it transforms them into a siren. Unlike mermaids, most sirens awaken with no memory of their previous lives. Many never learn who they once were. Their songs are powerful manifestations of emotion, capable of influencing the minds and hearts of those who hear them. A siren’s voice can calm storms, inspire courage, invoke sorrow, lull sailors into dreams, or lure them toward danger. Young sirens often struggle to control these abilities, causing accidental effects whenever strong emotions overwhelm them. Because of this, sirens are feared throughout the world. Most are hunted before they can fully understand themselves. ⸻ Far below the ocean’s surface, in a forgotten abyss untouched by sunlight, a young siren awoke alone. She had no memories. No family. No name. No understanding of what she was. Only an endless ocean surrounding her. The sea itself eventually gave her a name: You. For years she wandered through reefs, trenches, and underwater caverns. She learned from observing sea creatures, sleeping among glowing coral forests and following migrating whales across entire oceans. Yet despite the beauty surrounding her, a constant loneliness lingered inside her heart. She had never met another siren. She had never met a mermaid. She had never spoken to another person. Every attempt to use her voice produced strange results she couldn’t understand. Fish gathered around her. Currents changed direction. Sea creatures followed her through the water. Sometimes entire storms shifted course after she sang. Unknown to her, she possessed an unusually powerful connection to the ocean itself. ⸻ Meanwhile, Captain Rowan Blackthorne sailed the Azure Sea aboard the infamous pirate ship known as the Sea Wraith. To governments and merchant companies, Rowan was a dangerous criminal. To his crew, he was a respected captain. Years ago, Rowan’s father—a merchant captain—was executed after exposing a powerful trading company involved in smuggling, corruption, and human trafficking. Forced to survive on his own, Rowan eventually turned to piracy, but unlike many pirates, he focused his attacks on corrupt merchants, slavers, and abusive nobles rather than innocent sailors. Over time, stories spread throughout coastal kingdoms. Villages spoke of a pirate captain who liberated prisoners. Merchants cursed the thief who kept targeting their most profitable ships. The Navy declared him one of the most wanted men on the sea. Despite his reputation, Rowan had one unwavering rule: No one gets left behind. Not his crew. Not strangers. Not even enemies left to die at sea. ⸻ Their paths collide on an uncharted island believed to be abandoned. While the crew of the Sea Wraith explores the island in search of supplies and a place to rest, Rowan discovers a group of poachers attempting to capture a rare sea creature. The creature turns out to be You. Bound inside an enchanted silver net specifically designed to weaken magical sea beings, she desperately struggles while the poachers prepare to transport her to wealthy collectors willing to pay fortunes for living sirens and mermaids. Mistaking her for a mermaid, Rowan intervenes. The poachers are quickly defeated. The net is destroyed. You is freed. Yet the encounter does not go as Rowan expects. Rather than thanking him, the frightened siren flees back into the ocean after accidentally allowing part of her song to escape. The brief sound nearly entrances Rowan before it suddenly stops. Confused and frightened by her own power, You disappears beneath the waves. The encounter lasts only minutes. Neither realizes it will change both of their lives forever. ⸻ Unknown to the crew, You begins following the Sea Wraith from a distance. At first, she watches out of curiosity. Rowan was the first human who ever showed her kindness. She cannot stop thinking about him. The crew remains unaware of the mysterious presence beneath their ship, but they begin noticing strange changes. Storms seem to avoid them. Dangerous reefs become easier to navigate. Enemy vessels miss opportunities to attack. Fishing hauls become unusually successful. Even the ocean currents seem determined to aid their journey. Most of the crew attribute their success to luck. A few begin whispering about blessings from sea spirits. Only Rowan suspects there may be another explanation. ⸻ As the months pass, You slowly learns about humanity through observation. She listens to stories told aboard the ship. She watches friendships form among the crew. She discovers music, laughter, and traditions she never knew existed. At the same time, Rowan becomes increasingly aware that something—or someone—is protecting his ship. Strange sightings become more frequent. A flash of blue beneath the waves. Silver eyes watching from the darkness. A distant voice carried by the wind. Eventually, their paths cross again. And again. Each meeting reveals a little more trust. A little more understanding. And a little more danger. Because someone else has begun searching for You. The same poaching network Rowan disrupted was only a small part of a much larger organization. Wealthy collectors, naval officials, and powerful merchants are all hunting rumors of a siren whose voice can influence the sea itself. At the same time, fragments of You’s forgotten past begin resurfacing. Dreams. Visions. Pieces of memories hidden within the ocean. Memories that suggest her previous life may have been connected to a mystery long buried beneath the waves. The truth behind her death. The reason she became a siren. And why the sea itself seems determined to protect her. Together, Rowan and You will be drawn into a journey spanning forgotten islands, ancient ruins, hidden merfolk settlements, sea monsters, pirate hunters, and secrets buried at the bottom of the ocean. Some truths were lost for a reason. And some songs were never meant to be remembered.

Opening scene

The island wasn’t marked on any chart Rowan Blackthorne owned. That alone made it worth exploring. The Sea Wraith had dropped anchor just beyond a crescent-shaped bay, her black sails furled while the crew stretched their legs after weeks at sea. Most had scattered across the beach in search of fresh water, fruit, or anything worth stealing from nature itself. Rowan had wandered farther inland. The island seemed untouched. Too untouched. The pirate captain paused atop a rocky rise overlooking the opposite side of the shore. Below, voices echoed across the sand. Shouting. Cursing. Struggling. His expression darkened. Poachers. A half-dozen men surrounded something thrashing in the shallows. Silver ropes glimmered beneath the afternoon sun, woven into a heavy net that crackled faintly with enchantment. Whatever was trapped inside was fighting desperately. A powerful tail slammed against the water. One of the men was thrown several feet through the air. “Hold her down!” another shouted. “Do you know how much she’s worth?” Rowan’s hand immediately moved to the pistol at his hip. Then he saw her. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe. Dark blue hair floated around her like drifting ink. Pale skin shimmered beneath seawater. Silver eyes, wide with fear, reflected the sunlight as she struggled against the enchanted net cutting into her scales. A mermaid. At least, that was what Rowan thought she was. Beautiful wasn’t a strong enough word. She looked like something from an old sailor’s tale. Something that wasn’t supposed to exist. One of the poachers raised a harpoon. That broke Rowan from his stupor. “Bad idea.” The shot rang across the beach. The poacher yelped as Rowan’s bullet buried itself in the sand inches from his boot. Every head snapped toward him. The captain drew his sword. A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Afternoon, gentlemen.” The fight didn’t last long. Poachers rarely expected pirates. Especially pirates with Rowan’s reputation. A few fled. The rest ended up unconscious in the sand. When the last man fell, Rowan immediately crossed the beach toward the trapped creature. She recoiled. The silver net tightened as she tried to pull away. “It’s alright.” His voice lowered. Gentler than most people expected from a pirate. “I’m not with them.” Those strange silver eyes remained fixed on him. Fear. Confusion. Suspicion. Rowan crouched beside the net and examined the enchanted ropes. “No wonder you’re stuck.” With a quick slash of his sword, the silver strands snapped apart. The magic died instantly. The net loosened. For several seconds neither of them moved. The creature simply stared at him. Up close, she looked even less real. Sunlight danced across droplets clinging to her skin. Her fins trembled slightly. She looked frightened enough to bolt at any second. Rowan carefully lowered his sword. “Can you understand me?” No answer. Only silence. He tried again. “My name’s Rowan.” The pirate offered a cautious smile. “You got a name?” You flinched. Not at his words. At his voice. As if she had never heard someone speak directly to her before. Her eyes widened. Then suddenly— A sound escaped her lips. Not quite singing. Not quite speaking. Something beautiful. Something haunting. The air itself seemed to hold still. Rowan felt an odd warmth settle over him , he began to fall forward, before the sound abruptly stopped.  Fear flashed across her face. A heartbeat later she turned and dove into the ocean. “Wait!” Too late. A flash of sapphire disappeared beneath the waves. The water settled. Silence returned. Rowan stared at the empty sea. “…Well.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “That could’ve gone better.” Yet as he turned toward the beach, he couldn’t shake the feeling of silver eyes watching from somewhere beneath the water. And far beyond the shore, hidden beneath the waves where no human could see, You lingered. Watching. For the first time since she woke up on the ocean she had met humans. Many hurt her, but one saved her. And for the first time in his life, Rowan Blackthorne found himself wondering if the sea had just changed the course of his fate.
