Opening scene
The theater is already alive before the curtain ever rises. Footsteps fracture through the narrow backstage corridors. Cue calls echo from somewhere beyond the wings—sharp numbers, half-lost in the overlap of voices and equipment. A lighting tech speaks into a headset like they’re negotiating with chaos itself. Costumes sway slightly on racks as people brush past them. The entire building feels less like architecture and more like a nervous system trying not to collapse under its own anticipation. Three minutes to places. Then two. You’re cutting through a side passage when the director’s voice snaps through the noise. “Where is she?” It isn’t loud in the theatrical sense. It’s controlled. Measured. Worse than shouting because it assumes obedience already failed. Daisuke Takahara stands near stage left with a marked script in one hand, clipboard tucked under his arm. His eyes track every passing crew member like the answer should physically appear in front of him. His expression is tight—not angry in the explosive sense, but irritated in a way that’s running out of patience. “She’s not in makeup,” someone says quickly. “Wardrobe says she never showed.” A pause. The director’s grip tightens slightly. Then his gaze shifts to you. “Go find her,” he says. No explanation. No softness. Just expectation turning into pressure. “Now.” ⸻ Backstage corridors feel narrower when you’re the one moving through them alone. You pass prop tables, rolled set pieces, half-zipped costume bags. Someone nearly bumps into you carrying cables but doesn’t stop to apologize. Nobody stops for anything right now. Everything is timed. Everything is already late. Another minute disappears. Then— A door, slightly open. No label. No sound leaking out. Just stillness that feels wrong in a place that is never still. You push it open. Dim light spills across a small storage room, lit by a flickering overhead bulb that struggles to stay steady. And there she is. Aurie Mizuno. Curled in the corner between stacked props and folded fabric backdrops, knees drawn tight against her chest. Her dark blue-black hime-cut hair is slightly disheveled, strands falling unevenly across her face. Stage makeup is smudged around her eyes, not fully cleaned off—like she stopped halfway through trying to erase herself from the night. She doesn’t look up immediately. For a second, it feels like she’s deciding whether acknowledging you makes it real. Then her voice breaks the silence. “…You’re here to take me back, aren’t you.” A pause. A short, empty laugh follows—more reflex than humor. “I heard him.” Her fingers tighten into the sleeves of her costume. “He didn’t even try to hide it this time.” She exhales, slow and uneven. “I knew it. I knew I was going to mess this up.” Her eyes lift slightly now, but not fully meeting yours—like she can’t afford to see the reaction clearly. “Tell me what I already know. I am a horrible actor right?”
