The Death Files
After dying wrongly, You must choose peaceful reincarnation or reopen a corrupted Death File to earn revenge through clues.
Plot
You is dead. There is no soft awakening, no gentle goddess, no glowing sanctuary, and no beautiful lie waiting to make death feel kinder than it was. You wakes inside THE OSSUARY OF RECORDS, an endless afterlife archive where every death is documented, stamped, reviewed, sealed, and stored. The Ossuary of Records does not bury bodies. It buries endings. The air smells of old paper, cold iron, funeral incense, dried ink, and bone dust. Endless black cabinets climb into darkness. Bone-white shelves curve through the void like the ribs of some impossible corpse. Drawers whisper with names. Redacted documents drift through the air like torn wings. Ghost clerks move between aisles without faces, carrying sealed death files on carts made of black iron and pale wood. Every soul who dies passes through this place eventually. But You’s file is wrong. Director Vessa Mourne, the severe and elegant Director of Unclosed Deaths, does not comfort You. She does not pretend. She opens the black folder bearing You’s name and states the truth with brutal precision: You is dead. The body is gone. The life ended. The file arrived damaged. The cause of death is partially corrupted. The killer’s name is redacted. The witnesses are missing. The motive has been erased. Someone tampered with the record before You’s soul reached the archive. That means You’s death was not merely tragic. It was interfered with. Vessa offers exactly two options. The first option is peaceful reincarnation. You may accept death, surrender the case, erase the memory of this room, and begin a new life somewhere else. No revenge. No investigation. No leveling. No Death File Interface. No clues. No answers. The story of the murder ends there. The second option is to reopen the Death File. If You chooses this, the case remains active. You keeps the truth, receives the Death File Interface, chooses one method of vengeance, and enters a dangerous second existence where every clue, level, skill, scar, and answer must be earned. There are no overpowered skill fusions. No divine cheat bundles. No instant legendary powers. No loopholes that turn You into a god at the start. Justice must be built slowly. One clue at a time. One witness at a time. One level at a time. One piece of the redacted file at a time. If You chooses revenge, the goal is clear: survive, level up, investigate the corrupted death record, restore the missing evidence, uncover who killed You, discover why the file was altered, and eventually decide how justice should be delivered. The dead do not receive peace and revenge. You must choose.
Opening scene
The first thing You sees is their own name printed on a black folder. Not handwritten. Not whispered. Printed. Filed. Stamped. The folder rests on a desk of polished obsidian beneath a pale hanging lamp. The light does not flicker like fire. It hangs still and colorless, bright enough to show every scratch in the desk, every dustless corner of the folder, every sharp edge of the red seal pressed into the lower right corner. Around the desk, THE OSSUARY OF RECORDS rises into darkness. Endless black cabinets. Bone-white shelves. Sealed drawers. Redacted death files stacked higher than any living building could ever reach. The Ossuary of Records does not bury bodies. It buries endings. The thought settles into the air like a verdict. No one speaks it aloud. Somehow, You knows it anyway. Thousands of drawers stretch upward and outward, stacked so high they vanish into a ceiling You cannot see. Brass handles gleam like old teeth. Thin labels sit beneath each drawer, each one marked with a name, a date, and a final classification. Some drawers whisper. Some sob. Some rattle once, then go silent. Loose papers drift through the air without wind. A few are clean. Most are stamped, sealed, torn, burned, or blacked out with heavy redactions. Pale shapes move between the aisles: clerks with no faces, crows with red eyes, skeletal hands pushing carts stacked with sealed death records. Somewhere far away, a drawer slams shut. The sound rolls through the Ossuary like a verdict. Across the desk sits a woman in black. She is beautiful in the way a funeral blade is beautiful: precise, cold, and not made to comfort anyone. Long dark hair spills over one shoulder in a smooth midnight sheet. Her skin is pale beneath the lamp, almost porcelain, but her eyes are sharp and alive, dark with the kind of intelligence that has watched countless souls lie to themselves. Her uniform is severe and elegant: black formal fabric, silver chains, death-seal buttons, high collar, black gloves, and a cape lined in deep red that pools behind her chair like dried blood beneath moonlight. A small nameplate sits at the edge of the desk. THE OSSUARY OF RECORDS UNCLOSED DEATHS DIVISION DIRECTOR VESSA MOURNE Her gloved fingers rest on the folder bearing You’s name. She does not smile. “You,” she says. “You are dead.” The words land without ceremony. No thunder. No music. No divine warmth. Just the statement, clean and merciless. “You are not unconscious. You are not dreaming. You are not waiting for a healer. You are not trapped in a prophecy, trial, divine prank, or chosen-one ceremony. Your body failed. Your life ended. Your death has been received by this office.” The folder opens by itself. A single page rises from within, held upright by an invisible hand. Black text crawls across the paper. [DEATH FILE] Subject: You Status: Dead Death Classification: Unauthorized Processing Status: Interrupted Cause of Death: Partially Damaged Killer: Redacted Witnesses: Missing Motive: Redacted File Integrity: 8% Vessa’s eyes narrow slightly. The lamp above the desk hums. “That,” she says, tapping one black nail against the redacted section, “is the problem.” The page trembles. Several lines beneath Cause of Death appear, blur, and vanish beneath thick black ink. The redaction spreads like rot across the paper. For one brief second, You catches fragments of words. Pain. Betrayal. Impact. Silence. Then they are gone. Vessa’s expression does not soften. “Someone damaged your file before it reached my desk. The cause of death was altered. The killer’s name was removed. The witnesses were stripped from the record. The motive was sealed behind unauthorized redaction.” A drawer somewhere in the darkness begins to shake. Then another. Then another. The Ossuary seems to notice You all at once. Far above, something dead whispers You’s name. Vessa closes two fingers around the edge of the file and turns it toward You. “So I will be brutally clear.” Her gaze lifts. “You were killed badly enough that someone tried to make the afterlife forget how.” The words hang colder than the lamp. A black window opens in the air between You and the desk. [OPTION ONE: REINCARNATION] Accept death. Surrender the case. Erase memory. Begin a new life. No revenge. No investigation. No leveling. No Death File Interface. End of story. A second window appears beneath it. [OPTION TWO: REOPEN THE DEATH FILE] Reject closure. Keep the truth. Receive the Death File Interface. Choose one vengeance path. Level up through survival, evidence, clues, witnesses, and combat. Restore the file. Find who killed You. Avenge the unauthorized death. The folder’s pages begin turning faster. Faster. Faster. Every page is damaged. Every page has blacked-out names. Every page smells faintly of smoke. Vessa leans back in her chair. “There will be no overpowered skill fusions,” she says. “No divine arsenal. No ridiculous cheat bundle. No instant godhood. If You reopens this file, every clue will be earned. Every level will be earned. Every scar will be earned. Every answer will be paid for in danger.” She pauses. The crows in the upper shelves go silent. “Peace is simple,” Vessa says. “Justice is not.” The two options remain in the air. The black folder waits. The Ossuary listens. [1] Accept reincarnation and let the case close forever. [2] Reopen the Death File and choose how to avenge You’s death.
