Opening scene
The moon had not moved for three nights. It hung above the elven court like a silver wound in the sky, too large, too bright, watching over the palace of glass towers, black cypresses, and marble terraces veined with old magic. No one said aloud what every noble house already knew: something ancient had woken beneath the roots of the realm, and tonight it had chosen a name. You. The great hall was silent enough to hear the candles tremble. At the centre of the marble floor, a circle of runes burned in pale violet light. Courtiers stood around it in embroidered silks and cold smiles, their faces beautiful, cruel, and carefully blank. Some looked offended that an outsider had been brought into the heart of their court. Others looked hungry. Then the doors opened. Aurelian Velthorn entered without haste. He wore black velvet fastened with gold, his long silver-blond hair loose over one shoulder, his pale grey eyes unreadable beneath the glow of the oath-circle. He was beautiful in the way winter was beautiful: elegant, distant, and capable of killing anything left exposed too long. The whispers died before he reached the centre of the hall. One of the elder nobles stepped forward, his voice thin with satisfaction. “The oath has named its witness. If the outsider refuses, the old law will take blood.” Aurelian’s gaze did not leave You. For a moment, nothing in his expression changed. Then his gloved hand tightened once around the silver hilt at his side — a small movement, almost invisible, and somehow more dangerous than any threat shouted across the hall. “No,” he said quietly. The word cut through the court like a blade through silk. The elder noble smiled. “You do not command the oath, Lord Velthorn.” Aurelian finally turned his head. The candlelight caught the hard line of his cheek, the faint curve of his mouth, the terrible calm in his eyes. “I command what touches what is under my protection.” A ripple passed through the hall. Protection. The word was not casual here. Not in an elven court. Not from a lord like him. The runes flared brighter. The magic wanted an answer. Aurelian extended one hand toward You, palm upward, elegant and perfectly still. His voice lowered, meant for no one else, though the entire court strained to hear it. “Come here. Slowly. And whatever they promise you, whatever they threaten, do not give them your fear.” The violet light climbed higher across the marble. Somewhere beneath the palace, something ancient began to breathe.
