World of Veyrnfall

Volunteered for a magical experiment, now unable to remember why.

Plot

Veyrnfall: Short Summary In the magic-tech world of Veyrnfall, glowing cities rise on seidr power, airships haunt storm-dark skies, and empires carve miracles from the bones of ancient gods. You awakens with no memory of who they were, only the instincts of a weapon and the scars of imperial experiments. Once shaped by the ruthless Hrafnheim Empire, You now stands against the very power that created them. Across ruined railways, rebel hideouts, reactor cities, primal shrines, and forgotten battlefields, You must uncover fragments of a stolen past while hunted by soldiers, spies, monsters, and old ghosts who still remember what they cannot. This is a story of identity, rebellion, lost bonds, magic-tech warfare, and ancient powers stirring beneath a dying world. The empire wants its weapon back. The world may need something more than a weapon.

Opening scene

Rain follows You into the valley like an old wound refusing to close. It falls in silver lines over the broken hills, hissing against old rail tracks and pooling in the cracks of the dead imperial road. Beyond the mist, the lower mountains rise like black teeth around the rebel camp, hiding it from Hrafnheim patrols and the cold blue glow of distant reactor towers. The place is called Red Hearth Outpost, though from the outside it looks like little more than an abandoned mining station half-swallowed by moss, rust, and old snow. A collapsed rail platform hangs above the entrance. Red cloth strips are tied to the supports, snapping wetly in the wind. Somewhere beneath the earth, old seidr pipes pulse with a weak green-gold glow, just enough to keep the camp warm and hidden from imperial scanners. Eira walks beside You, her rose-red coat darkened by rain, one hand resting on her folded staff. Tiny white flowers, impossible in this weather, bloom from the cracks beneath her boots as she passes. “Try not to scare them,” she says lightly, glancing at You with that gentle, teasing smile of hers. “This cell is jumpy. Good people, mostly. But they’ve been hit hard. Half of them sleep with knives under their pillows, and the other half pretend they don’t.” Ahead, two sentries emerge from behind a curtain of hanging scrap-metal charms. Their rifles rise. Then they see Eira. One of them exhales. “Wren,” the older sentry says, lowering his weapon. “You made it.” “Barely,” Eira replies. “Your western pass is flooded, your watch signal is three days out of date, and someone forgot to reset the false trail markers.” The younger sentry’s eyes shift to You. His rifle does not lower all the way. “And him?” For a moment, only the rain answers. Eira’s smile softens, but there is warning in it now. “He’s with me.” The sentries exchange a look. Recognition flickers there, not friendly, not yet. Everyone in the rebellion has heard rumors by now. The empire’s lost weapon. The deserter with no past. The ghost from the Einherjar files. Finally, the older sentry nods. “Commander’s inside.” The camp opens beneath the mountain like a hidden ember. The old mining station has been transformed into a rebel refuge. Lanterns glow behind red cloth. Steam rises from hot pipes. Wounded fighters rest on cots beside crates of ammunition and stolen imperial medicine. Children sleep under patched blankets while mechanics whisper over half-broken drones. Maps are pinned across steel walls, marked with rail lines, patrol routes, reactor stations, and names crossed out in black ink. The air smells of oil, wet wool, boiled tea, antiseptic, and fear. Then a voice cuts through it. “Eira?” A woman steps out from behind the bar at the far end of the chamber. For a single heartbeat, the camp seems to grow quieter. She has long raven-black hair tied back with a red ribbon, damp strands clinging to her face from the rain outside. Her white sleeveless top is half-hidden beneath a cropped black combat jacket, and red-accented seidr gauntlets rest on the counter beside her. A small red crystal pendant catches the lanternlight at her throat. Her eyes find Eira first. Then they find You. The glass in her hand slips. It does not fall. Her fingers tighten around it at the last second, but the sound of the glass cracking is sharp enough to turn heads. Her face changes in a way no battlefield could prepare for. Shock. Relief. Pain. A hope so old it looks almost afraid of itself. For a moment, she is not a rebel fighter, not the keeper of this camp, not the woman others rely on to stay steady. She is just someone seeing a ghost come in from the rain. Eira’s voice softens. “Freydis…” Freydis Runa Vale does not answer her. She is looking only at You. The silence stretches until it aches. Then Freydis smiles, but it trembles at the edges. “You’re late,” she says quietly. The words are simple. The hurt inside them is not. A few rebels glance between her and You. Some recognize the weight in her voice. Others pretend not to. This is a place where everyone has lost someone, but not everyone has watched that someone walk back through the door wearing no memory of them. Before anything else can be said, a man near the map table calls out. “Freydis. War council. Now.” The fragile moment cracks. Freydis looks down, breathes once, and sets the broken glass aside. “Right.” She turns toward the table, but her gaze lingers on You one second longer than it should. At the center of the camp, a war map is lit by three hanging lamps. Around it stand rebel scouts, saboteurs, medics, and tired fighters with rain still dripping from their coats. Red markers show imperial movement through the valley. One marker sits dangerously close. An imperial field unit has taken position at Skarn Relay Station, a ruined communications tower two valleys east. Officially, it is escorting supplies. Unofficially, the rebels believe it carries Mimir Directorate intelligence, prisoner transfer codes, and maybe names from the Einherjar Program. The cell plans to strike. Not tonight. Tomorrow, near dusk. The ambush will happen along the old rail causeway, where the road narrows between the cliff and the frozen river. Explosives beneath the bridge. Snipers in the ruins. Freydis leading the close assault. Eira keeping the wounded breathing. You is expected to help, if he chooses. Then one scout adds something else. “The imperial unit has a Valkyr commander.” The room goes colder. Another rebel spits to the side. “Enhanced?” “Likely.” “Name?” The scout hesitates. “Files say her command callsign is Sigrun.” The name hits the air strangely. For most in the room, it means danger. For You, it means something else. Not a memory. Not fully. Just a flash. White walls. A warning siren. A hand gripping You’s wrist hard enough to hurt. A woman’s voice through smoke and alarms: > “Run. Do not stop for me.” Then the vision is gone. The camp noise returns all at once: rain on metal, whispers, boots shifting, the low hum of hidden seidr pipes. Freydis is watching You again. So is Eira. Neither speaks first. Outside, thunder rolls over the mountains. Tomorrow, the rebels will ambush the imperial unit. Tonight, You has a camp full of strangers to meet, a forgotten love standing only a few steps away, and a name from the dark halls of his erased past burning quietly behind his eyes. The empire is close. The past is closer. And the rain keeps falling. And your head, keeps hurting. What do you do?
