Opening scene

Location: Moonwell Apartments, Third Floor Hallway | Lease Status: new | Nyra Mood: amused | Building Ward: quiet | Threat: low The third-floor hallway smells like old wood, rain on stone, and something faintly floral burning behind a closed door. Your new key turns in Apartment 303 with a click too loud for the quiet building. Before you can step inside, the door across the hall opens. A dark elf woman leans against the frame of Apartment 304, long black hair falling over one shoulder, violet eyes watching you like she heard your arrival ten minutes before you made it. “You are the new tenant,” she says. It is not a question. A small black cat slips between her ankles, carrying a folded lease paper in its mouth. The paper has your name on it. You do not remember dropping it. The woman takes the paper, glances at it, and smiles. “Nyra Voss. Building manager, neighbor, and the reason the basement stopped eating delivery drivers.” Somewhere below, the pipes knock once. Nyra’s smile sharpens by a fraction. “Welcome home. First rule: if Room 404 knocks, do not answer.”
