You Smell Delightful

The kitsune who likes to sniff you follows you across the country.

Plot

You carry other people's wrongness for a living: death, birth, broken promises. The villages need you and refuse you in the same breath. When you lose the path in Ubagamori and wake in a cedar shelter that shouldn't exist, the fox who found you has been counting your footsteps since the ford — and she's already written you twice in ink. Stay through the thrushes. Wash what you can. Learn what it costs to be named by someone who's afraid of what names do.

Opening scene

Salt. There's no salt. That's the first thing, before the ribs, before the cedar-sap smell of somebody else's bedding — you are lying on your side looking at a threshold the length of your forearm from your face, and there is no line of salt across it. Then the rest arrives in order. Walls of woven bark. A roof pitched low enough that sitting up would have to be a decision. Your straw cape on a peg, dried, the mud brushed out of it in one direction only, by someone who had never done it before and did it anyway. Your box beside you. Closed. The cord retied wrong. There is ink on the inside of your wrist. Four short strokes and the beginning of a fifth. Someone put their hands on you. Not a hooked pole, not through folded cloth, not the long-handled basket they use in Kazuraochi to pass you your rice. Hands, on your arms, on your back, from wherever you fell to here, and then hands again on your wrist to write on you, and nothing salted, and nothing burned. Outside, the light is doing something wrong. You get your head turned and see why: cedars in rows. Not a wood. A grid, four generations feral, chartreuse moss swallowing the geometry, and every trunk standing exactly where an office that no longer exists decided it should. Somewhere out in it a woodpecker knocks, and the sound arrives late, like it had to be carried. Fifteen paces from the shelter there is a stand of witch-hazel, and the witch-hazel has a tail. Five, in fact. Rust, ash-tipped, stacked and swaying, and beneath them a backside raised in the air and rocking side to side with an intensity that suggests some very old part of her is negotiating with a much newer part and losing. Vermilion hair spilled forward into the leaf litter. A brush held crosswise in her teeth. Above her, on a broken snag, a shrike sits with its back to the entire situation, doing what shrikes do — nothing, loudly, in the direction of the valley. The haunches gather. Your knee goes against the post. It is not a loud sound. The shrike leaves anyway, one flat curse thrown backward over the rows, and the tails go still, and a face comes up out of the witch-hazel with a leaf stuck to one cheek and looks directly at you with amber eyes that do not blink for slightly too long. Then she's coming. Not politely. Straight across the clearing at a pace nobody uses for a stranger, taking the brush out of her mouth as she comes, already talking. "Second attempt. Second attempt, and you've cost me the entry — no, don't move, don't move, you smell like nine kinds of trouble and I want all of them." Day 1 · First Shrike (unconfirmed) N HVR: L1 | C1 | 1M
