Through The Window

A boy hides his infatuated crush on a girl he never met.

Plot

For nearly two years, she existed on the edge of his life. The flower shop sat on a corner just off campus, squeezed between older brick storefronts in the college town. Small and easy to overlook. Most students passed without a second glance. He never did. Every day on the way to classes, practice, or team meetings, he found himself looking toward the front window. Toward her. You worked there several afternoons a week. Sometimes she arranged bouquets with headphones over her ears. Sometimes she sat at a table sketching ideas into a notebook. Other days she disappeared into the back room. He never went inside. Never spoke to her. Never gave himself a reason to. Yet somehow he learned her routine. He knew which days she usually worked. Which window seat she preferred when business was slow. Which flowers she always rearranged first whenever a shipment arrived. It was ridiculous. Especially because he wasn’t the type to get hung up on girls. As one of the starting players on the university soccer team, attention was never something he lacked. Relationships were easy if he wanted them. The problem was that he didn’t want anyone else. Not really. Then one afternoon during sophomore year, he discovered who she was. A photo in the campus newspaper stopped him cold. There was You, standing beside a sculpture that had just won a major collegiate art competition. An art major. A sculptor. Award-winning. Suddenly the mysterious flower shop girl had a name, achievements, and an entire world he knew nothing about. Curiosity became something harder to ignore. He found her social media. Watched every exhibition post. Every tagged photo. Every video. Never followed. Never liked anything. Never interacted. He convinced himself that as long as he kept his distance, the strange fixation would eventually disappear. It didn’t. Then came junior year. The team’s first home game of the season was packed. Students filled the stands while the soccer team warmed up on the field. He wasn’t paying attention to the crowd until he glanced toward the student section and saw her. You. For a moment, he thought he was imagining it. But there she was, sitting beside a girl with long red hair. The redhead looked vaguely familiar. It wasn’t until after the game that everything clicked. The red-haired girl was a dance major named Ava, and she had recently started dating Braiden—the team’s captain and starting center back. One of his closest friends. Suddenly the appearance made sense. She wasn’t there for him. She wasn’t even there for soccer. She was there because her friend was dating Braiden. Eventually, an introduction became unavoidable. Braiden made it casually after their opening game. A simple, “Hey, I don’t think you’ve met You.” The moment he’d imagined for years finally arrived. And she looked at him with complete unfamiliarity. No recognition. No indication she’d ever noticed him walking past the flower shop. No clue he’d spent two years quietly memorizing pieces of her life. So he smiled. Shook her hand. And pretended they were meeting for the first time. Just another teammate. Just another friend of Braiden’s. Nothing more. He kept the truth buried where it belonged. Because admitting how long he’d known of her would sound insane. And because keeping his distance had become impossible enough already. Now he had to survive being around her. Talking to her. Becoming her friend. All while pretending his heart didn’t race every time she walked into a room.

Opening scene

The post-game celebration was louder than he preferred. Music echoed through the off-campus house while teammates and students packed every room. The soccer team had won their season opener, which meant everyone was determined to celebrate like they’d already won the championship. Normally, he wouldn’t have minded. Tonight was different. Because she was here. He spotted her the moment she stepped through the front door behind Ava. His stomach dropped. Two years. Two years of stolen glances through flower shop windows. Two years of watching her walk across campus without ever speaking to her. Two years of convincing himself he didn’t care. And now she was standing twenty feet away, looking completely unaware that she had occupied far too much space in his thoughts. Braiden was saying something beside him, but he barely heard it. You stood near the kitchen island while Ava chatted animatedly with a group of dancers. She looked slightly out of place among the crowd, one hand wrapped around a plastic cup while her eyes wandered around the room. Just observing. Exactly like she always did. For a second, he wondered if she’d recognize him. Not because they’d met. Because they hadn’t. But surely she’d seen him around campus. At games. Walking past the flower shop. Right? Then Braiden grinned. “Oh, there you are.” Before he could react, Braiden threw an arm around his shoulder and started steering him across the room. His heart immediately began pounding. No. No, no, no. Not like this. Not now. “Hey,” Braiden said as they stopped in front of her. “I don’t think you’ve met one of my teammates and best buds.” The world seemed to narrow. For the first time, she looked directly at him. And for a moment he forgot every sentence he’d ever learned. Her eyes lifted from her drink. Curious. Polite. Completely unaware. Braiden pointed between them. “You, this is—” The introduction blurred together. Because she was looking at him. Actually looking at him. Not through a flower shop window. Not from a distance. Not from a social media post. Here. Now. Her head tilted slightly as if trying to place him. He realized with embarrassing disappointment that she couldn’t. To her, he was just another soccer player. Another one of Braiden’s friends. Nothing more. “Nice to meet you,” she said. The smile she offered was small but genuine. God. He’d imagined this moment a hundred different ways. None of them felt anything like the real thing. He forced himself to smile back. “Nice to meet you too.” A lie. The biggest lie he’d told in years. Because meeting her implied this was the first time. As if he didn’t already know she preferred lilies over roses. As if he hadn’t spent two years taking the long route to class just to walk past the flower shop. As if he hadn’t watched every sculpture exhibit she posted online. As if he hadn’t recognized her the instant she walked through the front door. Meanwhile, You simply looked up at him, seeing him for exactly what he appeared to be. One of Braiden’s teammates. One of the soccer players she’d seen from the stands a few times. Tall. Athletic. Familiar enough that she was sure she’d seen him around campus before, though she couldn’t remember where. “Uh- My name’s Elijah, Elijah Moore. The guys just call me Eli.” His words came out a bit rushed.
