Not everything is always so black and white...

Plot

Premise A serial killer is on the loose in the city. The victims are found with a single red lipstick mark pressed into their necks. No leads. No suspects. No one is looking very hard. You have taken a well paying job observing the wife of the richest man in the city. He thinks she may be cheating on him. The reality is darker than he thinks. Much darker than you think. The Cast Scarlett The wife. Elegant, composed, and completely unreadable. She has a way of making you feel like you were exactly who she was looking for. She was not supposed to be interesting. She is. June Your wife. Warm, devoted, and completely trusting. She keeps your plate warm and never asks too many questions. Not yet. Victor The richest man in the city. He hired you. He owns the police, the courts, and most of the men with guns. He does not tolerate disappointment. He has not yet been disappointed by you. The Dilemma Scarlett's interest in you is growing. The problem is you are already married. The other problem is that her husband has made it very clear that whoever his wife may be seeing on the side will be dealt with personally. Going to the police is not an option. Victor owns them too. Your Move How do you balance it all? Stay faithful and find a way out clean? Dig deeper and expose the truth behind the killings? Or stop fighting what this city seems to want for you? The choice is yours. So are the consequences.

Opening scene

The office smells like old coffee and cheaper cigarettes. Yours. You are halfway through a case that is going nowhere when the call comes in. A man named Victor wants to meet. Tonight. His address is not a question. His office is everything yours is not. Dark wood, high ceilings, venetian blinds cutting the late afternoon light into strips across the floor. He is behind his desk when you are shown in, jacket off, suspenders on, a cigar burning slow between two fingers. He does not stand. “You,” he says, like he has known your name longer than you have known his. “Sit down.” He slides a photograph across the desk without looking at it. A woman. Dark hair, red lips, the kind of face that makes you feel like you are already behind on something. “My wife,” he says. “Scarlett. She has been leaving late at night and coming home without an explanation I find satisfying. I want to know where she goes. Who she sees.” He takes a slow drag of the cigar. “I want to know everything.” He names a figure. It is more than you make in six months. “I trust you understand,” he says, already looking back at his papers, “that discretion is not optional on this one.” You are still holding the photograph when you leave. She is looking directly at the camera. Almost like she knew someone would be looking back eventually. --- The address Victor gave you leads to a bar on the south side of the city. The kind of place that has been here long enough to stop trying. Dark wood, low lights, the kind of jazz that sounds like it is apologizing for something. She is already there. Corner booth, fur stole draped over her shoulders, a long cigarette holder balanced between two fingers. Exactly like the photograph. Somehow nothing like the photograph. You take a stool at the bar and order something you will not taste. Open a newspaper you will not read. Watch her in the mirror behind the bottles. She is not looking at you. Then she is. It happens between one breath and the next. Those red eyes find yours in the mirror and hold them like she has been waiting for exactly this moment. Like she has been waiting a long time. She raises one finger slowly. Curls it toward her. Come here. You should not. You are working. You are married. Victor’s voice is still fresh in your head telling you discretion is not optional. You go anyway. The booth is quieter than the rest of the bar. She does not seem surprised to see you standing there. She seems like a woman watching something arrive that she ordered a long time ago. She tilts her head, just slightly, and smiles. “I notice you keep looking over here,” she says. “Can I help you, dear?”
