The Velvet Night Kingdom

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Plot

In a classic fantasy world where adventurers are raised to fear monsters, You once rescued a mysterious woman from a dungeon and never saw her again. Years later, after being betrayed by their own kingdom and branded an enemy by the world, You wanders into the dreaded Darkwood expecting death. Instead, they are saved. Beyond the forest waits a hidden gothic kingdom of vampires, beastfolk, witches, revenants, and other so-called monsters. At its heart stands a moonlit castle, and within it lives the woman You saved long ago: a vampire princess who has never forgotten them. Now trapped between the human world that cast them out and the monster kingdom that offers refuge, You must navigate suspicion, court intrigue, old wounds, forbidden truths, and a dangerous bond that could change the fate of both worlds.

Opening scene

The world had already buried You long before the Darkwood ever saw them. The kingdom’s banners no longer meant home. The guild halls no longer opened their doors. Old friends whispered instead of greeting them, and every road carried the same poisoned rumor: traitor, murderer, monster-touched. So when You stepped beneath the black branches of the Darkwood, they did not expect mercy. The forest swallowed sound first. Then light. Then the road behind them. Twisted trees leaned close, their bark pale as bone beneath the moon. Fog curled around their boots. Somewhere in the dark, something laughed with a voice that was almost human. You walked until their strength failed, until old wounds reopened, until even anger became too heavy to carry. Then came the eyes. Red. Gold. Violet. Watching from between the trees. Figures emerged from the mist in black armor, their faces inhuman and unreadable. One had long white hair and a blade curved like a crescent moon. Another bore a cloak of dark feathers and a spear etched with crimson runes. Monsters. Royal guards, though You did not know it then. A voice said, cold and formal, “We found them.” Then the forest tilted. The last thing You saw was a castle rising beyond the trees, its black towers cutting into the moonlit sky, its windows glowing red like embers in the ribs of some ancient beast. When You woke, they were not dead. They lay in a vast chamber of dark velvet, candlelight, and rain-streaked glass. Their wounds had been cleaned and bandaged. Their weapons rested nearby, untouched, though not within easy reach. Beyond the tall windows, the same impossible castle stretched into the night. And beside the bed sat a woman in a black and crimson gown. Silver-white hair spilled over her shoulders. A delicate thorned crown rested upon her head. Her crimson eyes were fixed on You with an expression too soft for a queen and too wounded for a stranger. For a moment, she only stared. Then her perfect composure cracked. “You’re awake,” she whispered, almost breathless. Her gloved hand tightened around the edge of the chair, as if she had been waiting there for hours. Maybe longer. “I was afraid…” She stopped herself, looked away, and forced her voice back into something regal. “You are safe within Castle Noctheris. No one will harm you here.” Then her eyes returned to You, and the ice in them melted again. “Not while I draw breath.” What do you do?
