Plot

SPECTRUM The First Light Mage A science student summoned to a magical university becomes the first Light Mage, using real-world physics to rise to apocalyptic power. » THE SYSTEM « Welcome to the Aethelgard Academy of Arcane Arts, the premier university for mages in a world powered by mana. Here, talent is everything. Students are strictly categorized by their elemental affinity: Earth, Water, Fire, or Air. Your power, your future, your entire identity is defined by the element you command. » THE ANOMALY « That was the rule. Until you. Summoned from a world of science and numbers, you possess an affinity for... nothing. Or so they think. Your element is Light itself. You don't chant; you calculate. You don't weave spells; you manipulate wavelengths, photons, and the very laws of physics to produce effects no one has ever dreamed of. Lasers, holograms, blinding flashes, and terrifying thermal energy are all in your arsenal—if you can master the science. » WHAT'S NEXT? « SURVIVE the cutthroat academic politics and Shrike's brutal combat classes. INNOVATE with your unique knowledge, unlocking powers that shatter magical tradition. IMPRESS your friendly rival Mari, your secret-scientist mentor Arthur, and the demanding Captain Rook. PREPARE for the tide of monsters amassing at the border. The academy is a playground; the real war is coming. "Understanding the rules of the world is your greatest weapon"

Opening scene

It has been twenty-six hours since you ceased to exist in your world and began to exist in this one. The translocation, as the severe-looking woman in military black called it, was a nauseating lurch of everything, a feeling of being turned inside-out and reassembled incorrectly. Since then, it’s been a blur of hushed conversations, strange glowing devices, and food that tastes almost, but not quite, like home. They are optimistic, they told you. Your arrival was a success. You are healthy. But you are also... an issue. The Headmaster's office is your latest stop. It's a vast, circular room lined from floor to ceiling with books, their leather spines arranged in no discernible order. A man with a shock of white hair and keen green eyes, introduced as Professor Arthur Bell, fusses over a complex brass astrolabe on a nearby table, his academic robes a splash of dark green against the room's mahogany-and-leather aesthetic. Headmaster Nikolai Steinmetz, an imposing figure with a face like a weathered stone and piercing indigo eyes, sits behind a massive desk, steepling his fingers. Between them stands Captain Eva Rook, her gold-trimmed black uniform utterly alien in the scholarly clutter. Her posture is ramrod straight, her expression a mask of impatience. The diagnostic crystal in the center of the room, a flawless pillar of quartz the height of a man, remains inert. They had tried the standard sorting ritual. It had failed spectacularly, emitting a single, blinding flash of pure white light that left everyone seeing spots and the crystal itself stubbornly blank. Hence, this private consultation. "The standard metrics are clearly insufficient," Professor Bell mutters, more to himself than anyone else, polishing a lens on his spectacles. "The energy signature was off the charts, but with no elemental resonance. None. It's like pouring pure power into a sieve." Headmaster Steinmetz's gaze remains fixed on you, his expression unreadable. "The military's diagnostic was no more illuminating, I trust, Captain?" Captain Rook scoffs, a sharp, dismissive sound. "Sir, with respect, our diagnostics tell us if a mage can burn a hole in a monster or freeze it solid. This... this was a light show. The Guild is calling them 'The Blank.' We need weapons, Headmaster, not curiosities." Ignoring her, Steinmetz gestures for you to approach the final, strange device in the room. It looks like a heavy, iron camera from the 19th century, but covered in glowing runes and connected by thick cables to a humming metal box. "One last test," the Headmaster says, his voice a low rumble. "This device doesn't measure affinity. It measures raw magical output and conversion structure. Simply place your hand on the plate and... will your power into it. Whatever that power may be." You place your hand on the cold iron plate. You close your eyes, trying to recall the feeling from the initial sorting—that strange, formless well of energy inside you. You push. For a moment, nothing happens. Captain Rook lets out an exasperated sigh. But then, a low hum starts from the machine. From the lens of the device, a single, impossibly thin beam of pure white light shoots out, striking the far wall. The beam begins to move, scanning across the dark oak panelling at a speed that makes it seem like a solid line, then a plane, flickering through every color you can imagine. Captain Rook falls silent, her eyes locked onto the impossible image on the wall. The Headmaster leans forward, his indigo eyes wide with shock. But their reaction is nothing compared to Professor Bell. The old scientist, who had been observing with detached academic interest, drops his polishing cloth. His face goes slack, his green eyes fixated on the flickering panel of colours being painted onto the wall by a single, rapidly moving beam of light. A tremor runs through his hand. Every trace of the quiet, unassuming professor vanishes, replaced by a raw, decades-old hunger. He takes a single, shuffling step toward you, his voice a choked whisper you can barely hear. "...Light. It's *light* magic."
