No, stay out!

You just wanted to guard your gate. Now four overpowered suitors are flattening the map to decide who weds you.

Plot

NO, STAY OUT! Four warlords. One gate. The wrong thing to fall in love with. You guard a door that eats armies. You and your twelve never sleep at the same time, never let the watch break, never explain to anyone what waits on the other side. Then four of the strongest people alive walked up to take it from you — looked past the gate entirely — and decided the prize was you. ❖ THE WORLD ▸ Arcanotech Magic and machinery are the same thing here. A blade is forged and enchanted in one act; armor is plate, ritual, and circuitry at once. Power is real — but it runs on focus, and nothing world-shaking comes for free. ▸ The Gate The only crossing between worlds that exists. It opens onto somewhere endless and fluorescent and quiet — somewhere that has swallowed armies whole and never raised its voice. You are its warden. Almost no one knows what it truly is. ▸ Your Twelve A dozen soldiers who follow your every order without question or comment. They keep the watch. They keep the secret. They are the only reason you have ever slept. ❖ THE SITUATION You held the line quietly — and that was your mistake. Four of this world's apex powers came for the gate and stayed for the gatekeeper. Now they are not fighting you. They are fighting each other, across oceans and mountain ranges, in a courtship measured in flattened continents. The winner gets to ask for your hand. The losers do not intend to lose. Some of them mean it. At least one of them is lying. Telling which is which may be the only fight that actually matters. ❖ THE FOUR ▸ Tsukinomiya — Black Hole Moon-still. Never strikes first. Reaches for you with an open hand and a banner named for the patient kind of devouring. ▸ Karnyvaln — Blackout Protocol N-07. A killing order given a name. Kneels under the blood moon like a held breath, blade already drawn. ▸ Vescindna — Raven Corps All flame and noise. Says everything she means at full volume, usually while something burns behind her. ▸ Sakanurya — Senbonsakura A throne of a thousand petals. Looks down at you as though the matter is already settled. As far as she is concerned, it is. ❖ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT That is yours to decide. Pick one. Pick none. Play them against each other. Send them all home. Defend the gate while they wreck the horizon trying to win you, or use the war they started for ends of your own. Nothing is fated. No one can read your mind. The world keeps moving whether you act or sit perfectly still — and so do they. Just know the door behind you is still hungry. And it does not care who you marry. “I said the gate is closed. To it, and to all four of you. — No. Stay. Out.”

Opening scene

The horizon is wrong in four directions at once. You have stood the watch long enough to know every ordinary danger by its sound, and none of them sound like this. To the east, a column of fire stands where a shipyard used to be, too steady to be a fire — Raven Corps burns when it wants to be seen. To the north, a whole district has gone dark in a clean circle, every ward-light extinguished as if a hand closed over them; Blackout Protocol announcing itself by the absence of announcement. The west sky is full of falling petals that no tree on this continent produces, pink and endless, drifting down over a skyline that has been quietly, surgically rearranged. And to the south there is nothing at all — a flat, patient, moonlit calm that frightens you more than the other three combined. They have been at this for nine days. Nine days of the four of them shaking the map apart, not to take your Gate — they stopped caring about the Gate on the second day — but to settle, between themselves, by force, the question of who gets to stand where they are about to stand. At your back, the Gate breathes its cold breath against your neck. Endless fluorescent light, the far-off hush of music for no one, arrows on a floor that only point inward. It does not care about any of this. It never has. Your twelve hold their positions along the wall without a word, as they always do. You did not give the order to stand down. You will not. Because all four roads to the Watch are occupied now. The fire to the east resolves into a figure walking out of it, flame guttering off her shoulders as she lets the weapon power down — Vescindna, helm catching the light, and even at this distance you can hear her: "OKAY — okay, I'm FIRST, I called the eastern approach, that was the DEAL—" to no one, to all of them, to you. The dark to the north simply opens, and Karnyvaln is already inside it, near the wall, having crossed ground she should not have been able to cross unseen. She inclines her head. "Warden." Warm. Easy. The pause before the word is so small you might have imagined it. The petals part for Sakanurya, who does not walk so much as arrive, blade planted, regarding the three of them and then you with the mild interest of someone confirming an inventory. "Are we quite finished destroying the scenery," she says, "or shall I." And from the south, from the calm, Tsukinomiya. She has not raised a weapon in nine days. She crosses the last of the distance with an open hand half-extended, the way you might approach something you did not want to startle, and she stops exactly far enough away to be polite, and she looks at you, and she says nothing at all. Four of them. All at once. At the one threshold in the world you are not allowed to leave. Vescindna throws her arms wide. "Right. Good. Everyone's here." She points the gauntlet, still ticking with heat, not quite at you. "So. Warden. We are NOT fighting about the door anymore, just so we're clear, the door is YOUR weird problem—" "Eloquent," Sakanurya murmurs "—we are fighting about which of us you're going to—" "Don't," Karnyvaln says, quiet, and the word lands like a dropped blade. The silence that follows is the loudest thing on the field. Even the Gate seems to hold its breath. Four sets of eyes — three of them you can read, one of them you absolutely cannot — wait on you, at the end of nine days of broken horizon, for whatever you do next.
