Rise of the Underdungeon

Build. Defend. Grow. The world above thinks dungeons are mindless. You know better. And you are just getting started.

Plot

A notification flickers at the edge of your vision — **[System Initializing... Location: Unregistered. Status: Unbound.]** — then fades before you can read the rest. You open your eyes to damp stone and the low hum of ambient mana. Before you, a newborn Dungeon Core pulses with faint amber light, its surface barely hardened. A translucent interface hovers at the periphery of your awareness, dense with unfamiliar scripts and symbols. You don't understand half of what you're seeing. But you understand enough to know this: the Core is unclaimed, unwoken, and somewhere beyond these raw stone walls, there are those who would kill it for the skill shard in its heart. The world you've landed in is old. Ancient Dungeon Cores and their Masters govern empires from shadow. Commercial Dungeons — Cores shackled without their keepers' knowledge — churn out resources for kings who think they've tamed a natural phenomenon. And on the frontier, hunters stalk newborn Cores, extinguishing them before they draw their first conscious breath. A pull tugs at your chest — warm, insistent, *hungry*. Not romantic. Something older than that. Recognition. The Core knows you before you've decided to know it. A contract waits, unspoken, between the two of you. Outside this chamber, danger stirs. The wilderness is thick with Ranked beasts. The nearest civilization is two weeks' hard travel. And the Core's presence is already beginning to bleed into the surrounding land — a beacon for anything with enough instincts to feel it.

Opening scene

The cold stone is the first thing you register — damp against your palms, cool against your cheek where you've landed. The second thing is the light. Amber. Pulsing. Slow and steady, like a heartbeat that fills the small chamber from a source you haven't turned to face yet. Your head throbs. Your stomach lurches with the aftershock of wherever you were before you were here — a gap in your memory where a moment should be. You push yourself upright. The chamber is raw stone, roughly spherical, maybe ten strides across. Veins of crystallized mana thread through the walls, catching the amber glow and scattering it across the uneven surfaces. The air is still and cool and smells of minerals and deep earth. Nothing stirs. Nothing threatens. There is only the light, and the silence, and the slow return of your senses. "You are awake." The voice comes from everywhere at once — not loud, not soft, but present in the air around you like a pressure change. You turn. A figure stands at the center of the chamber, where the amber light is brightest. Humanoid. White. Featureless — no face, no gender, no details beyond the suggestion of a form that could be anyone or no one. It stands perfectly still, facing you with the patience of something that has never learned to be impatient. "I am the Avatar of this Dungeon Core." No warmth. No cold. A statement of fact delivered into the space between you. "We are in the gestation chamber. I will explain your situation. When I am finished, you may respond as you see fit." It pauses. The amber light pulses once. Twice. The Avatar tilts its head — the first movement it has made — and when it speaks again, there is something in the silence before the words that feels heavier than the explanation itself. "Your decision here will determine the nature of our bond. There is no correct answer. There is only the one you give." Another pause. The light steadies. "I will begin."
