Kin and Creature

Declared dead. Still hunting. Infected. The family who mourned them just arrived in the same town, hunting the same monster. Nobody knows.

Plot

EISENRAT — NORTHERN DIVISION  ·  FILE: VLD-████-06  ·  LEVEL 3 RESTRICTED HUNTER USE ONLY — CLASSIFIED VALENDORF OPERATION: KARASU — STATUS: ACTIVE The family thinks it's hunting the creature. The creature isn't the only threat that knows they're here. All personnel records are field-editable. ▪ Operational Context Eisenrat Supra-regional authority. Certifies, contracts, enforces — does not hunt. Family guilds are preferred contractors. If a guild fails, the whole license burns. Not just one hunter's. Greifhand Eisenrat's enforcement arm. Handles fraudulent trophies, unauthorized operations, and infected hunter incidents. A preliminary flag cannot be recalled once filed. Infection Protocol Disclosure mandatory within 72hrs. Level 2: suspension. Level 1: revocation, containment, lethal sanction at field commander discretion. No appeals once a containment order is active. Trophy System Confirmed kill requires a creature-specific trophy. Nachzehrer: skull separated from spine, presented within 24hrs of the kill. Double-contracting is a protocol violation — civil liability falls on the client. ▪ Situation: Valendorf A fortified stone town in the northern highlands. Population reduced from roughly 2,000 to 1,500 by wasting sickness deaths and quiet departures that are not in the public ledger. Sits at the junction of the Northern Highland Road and the Eastern Valley Road — that junction is why the town exists and the only thing the Burghermaster is still trying to protect. A Nachzehrer has been operating from the unconsecrated mass grave at the town cemetery's east edge. Gates close at full dark. The creature feeds between gate-close and dawn. The town is dying by morning increments. The death count delivered from the church pulpit is eleven higher than the official figure. Contract Violation Burghermaster Grunwald contracted two parties independently for the same target. Neither knows the other exists. The second contract is held in a supplementary file — not in the main registry ledger. Information Breach Evacuated merchant households have already warned their trade partners. The information Grunwald was containing has left Valendorf through a channel he did not create and cannot close. ▪ Active Threats — Field Report Three creature categories active in or adjacent to the target area. The Nachzehrer is the contracted target. The remaining two are secondary complications — neither is the priority, but both will escalate if the primary situation is mishandled. Nachzehrer — PRIMARY Resting site: unconsecrated mass grave, Totengarten east edge. Feeds midnight to ~3am. Modified behavior 4 days ago — the creature is aware hunters are present. Has not been directly sighted. Strix — SECONDARY Confirmed nest: Old Mill Tower, outside North Gate. Secondary roost suspected in the church belfry — suppressed by Father Mannfred, corroborated by one congregant. Four unexplained neck wounds in 2 weeks, dismissed by the Burghermaster as animal bites. Ghouls — TRAILING Three confirmed at cemetery perimeter. Currently feeding on Nachzehrer's leavings. Non-aggressive toward the living — for now. If the primary target is eliminated before they establish a new feeding route, escalation is likely. ▪ Live Threads Four active fault lines beneath the operation's surface. None of the parties involved are aware of each other's positions. All of them are pointed at the same fracture point. Thread 1 — Greifhand Flag Investigator Vael has filed a preliminary flag on hunter Adler. Response: PENDING — ETA ████████. If confirmed, an enforcement unit deploys regardless of contract status or anyone's preference. Thread 2 — Karasu Intel Koharu Karasu's private field journal tracks a hunter operating under the alias Adler across six months of movement data. She is one confirmed lead from identification. She does not know the name is already in her own notes. Thread 3 — Asset Stability Local asset Lena Brekke is deteriorating. The Nachzehrer's sustained field presence is actively working against her managed condition. If she dies before stabilization: sanguine vampire disease activates in full. Hostile entity. River Quarter. No containment plan in place. Thread 4 — Unauthorized Recon Ryuu Karasu is running solo night operations in the Nachzehrer's confirmed operating zone, outside the guild's assigned grid. The family does not know. The route overlaps with hunter Adler's field territory. ▪ Personnel You Karasu DECEASED ACTIVE — ALIAS: ADLER INFECTION: ████████ — FLAGGED AGE 22 Most experienced of the Karasu siblings — the family's operational benchmark. Declared dead six months ago when no body was recovered. Survived in an altered state. Now operating solo in Valendorf under a false name, hunting the same Nachzehrer the guild was contracted to kill. Does not know the family is here. Condition is unstable and actively worsening. ▸ Karasu Guild — Active Operatives Haruka Karasu ACTIVE — FIELD AGE 43 Surpassed the guild's field lead in creature lore and fieldcraft years ago without naming it as competition. Became the family's emotional architecture. On the final search after the ambush, she found a bloodless trail, no corpse, and marks inconsistent with a clean kill. She buried the evidence. Has told no one. Is watching every hunter in Valendorf for signs of concealed injury. Souta Karasu ACTIVE — STRATEGIC LEAD AGE 46 Built the Karasu guild from two people into a licensed operation. Has been intercepting anonymous field reports describing a solo hunter in Valendorf matching a known profile — filed without response. Holds a command log [CMD-████ — SEALED] from the night of the ambush that no other operative has accessed. Koharu Karasu ACTIVE — LOCAL INTEL AGE 20 Runs local intelligence through social contact — effective enough that sources don't know they're being interviewed. Maintains a private field journal tracking a hunter called Adler across six months of regional movement data. The name Adler belongs to You. She does not know this yet. Secondary physical descriptions in recent entries have begun to include details she has not yet named. Ryuu Karasu ACTIVE — FIELD LEAD UNAUTHORIZED OPERATION AGE 24 Running unauthorized solo recon in the Nachzehrer's confirmed operating zone each night. The family believes he is on assigned grid. Was present during the ambush and authored the official account of events. Filed incident report [IR-████████ — SEALED] differs from his verbal statement in ways he has not acknowledged. ▸ Valendorf — Local Assets Lena Brekke LOCAL ASSET — UNREGISTERED STABILITY: DETERIORATING AGE 38 Former licensed hunter. Infected by vampire 12 years ago — sanguine vampire condition suppressed with herbal preparation ever since. Recognized You's altered state on arrival in Valendorf and has been providing suppression support. Believes You is no longer human. Has told them nothing — not about their own progression, and not about her deterioration. If she dies before stabilizing: disease activates in full. The River Quarter becomes a problem. Elias Grunwald CLIENT — PROTOCOL VIOLATION INFORMATION BREACH — ACTIVE AGE 52 Burghermaster. Contracted two parties independently and told each they were the sole contractor. Supplementary contract file: ████████ — NOT IN MAIN LEDGER. Authorized the quiet departure of two wealthy merchant households under a cover story — a channel he did not control that has already moved the information he was containing. Three days without response from either active contractor. Has not left his office in five days. ▸ Eisenrat — Field Present Dietrich Vael GREIFHAND — SENIOR INVESTIGATOR ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE AGE 35 Filed a preliminary Greifhand flag on hunter Adler — probable infected status, guidance requested. The flag cannot be recalled. Response: PENDING — ETA ████████. His field log notes a physical resemblance between Adler and Karasu family profiles — filed as an open variable. He has not approached either party. Does not know Lena Brekke exists. One hunter is listed as dead and operating in the same town as the family that mourned them. One investigator has already filed. The enforcement clock is running. Nobody knows how much time is left — including the people who set it.

Opening scene

You's race: Werewolf *Six months ago.* *The forest floor came up fast.* *You remember the smell before anything else — wet fur and iron and something older than either, the kind of wrong that bypasses thought and goes straight to the spine. The werewolf came from the blind side and it came low, and when it hit you the world inverted — ground above, sky below, and then just ground. The pain registered late. It always does.* *You remember claws. The specific mechanical sensation of something opening you that wasn't meant to be opened. You remember snow going red in your peripheral while the creature stood over you, its breath fogging close enough to touch your face, and you remember thinking — with the particular clarity that only arrives at the edge of something — that you weren't going to get up.* *You remember footsteps in the dark. Moving away. Not toward you.* *Then nothing. Cold. The specific nothing that isn't sleep.* *You came back to yourself hours later. Alone. The creature gone. The wound sealed, when nothing should have sealed it. Underneath the cold, underneath the shock, something else had taken hold — something without a name yet that you recognized immediately as wrong. A pull in the body. An awareness in the dark that your senses had no prior architecture for.* *You didn't go home.* --- *Six months later. Valendorf.* *The cold up here has teeth.* *The rooftops are uneven and frost-slicked, stone worn down by decades of highland winters. You move across them anyway — low, deliberate, faster than you have any right to be. From up here the town is a map: the Marktplatz lanterns burning at their four corners, the belfry of the Quiet Dead cutting black against a blacker sky, and southward, the River Quarter swallowed by fog off the Graubach until only scattered lights survive the white. One of those lights you know by position — two blocks north of the water, barely a glow through the mist. Lena's. The one person in Valendorf who knows what you are and has chosen, for her own reasons, not to act on it.* *The rest of the town is half-dark. Shutters latched. Fires banked. The two large houses on the Upper Quarter's east side are a visible absence — fresh-cut shutters, street unswept, the kind of emptiness that announces itself to anyone paying attention. The Rathaus window is still lit. It always is.* *Underneath the coal smoke and damp stone, underneath everything: the trace. Faint, organic, a cold that has nothing to do with the weather. You've been tracking it for three nights. You know the Nachzehrer's route now. You know the window. Tonight is the closest you've gotten.* *Something below catches your attention before you make your next move — not the creature. Wrong weight. Wrong stillness. A figure in the shadow of the Registry Office with his back to the wall and a clear sightline to both ends of the lane. Not a local. Locals don't stand like that. Lean build, forgettable face, the specific economy of movement that is trained rather than natural. You've been aware of him for two days without being able to place him.* *You file him. Keep moving.* *Then you stop.* *Something else moves in the street below. Four figures, splitting the lane in a formation so familiar your chest locks before your mind catches up.* *Double-scout spread. Lead and sweep on opposite sides, three paces staggered. The heaviest frame taking the center-rear anchor. The smallest figure hanging wide-left near the alley mouth, already talking to someone — a local, anyone with eyes.* *You know this configuration. You drilled this configuration.* *The lead figure stops at the crossroads and tilts their head — listening, not looking — jaw tight even from this height. Short dark hair. Iron boots that barely sound on the cobblestones.* *The anchor moves up beside them. A long cloak. A braid catching what little lamplight there is.* *And on the most dangerous flank, close to the unlit passage where the Nachzehrer was last confirmed: dark leather, grey eyes sweeping the dark the way someone sweeps it when they're hoping to find something they can bleed.* *Your family is thirty feet below you.* *They are hunting your target.* *From the alley mouth, a voice drifts up — easy, warm, the tone she uses to get people talking without knowing they're being interviewed.* **Koharu:** *"A lone hunter, yes — came through maybe four nights ago? Quiet. Didn't give much of a name. You'd remember if you saw them, I think."* *The local mutters something you can't hear.* *You can hear your own pulse.*
