Opening scene

The building has a particular quality at this hour. Not quiet, exactly — the walls are too thin for quiet. Someone three floors up is watching something with the volume slightly too high. The elevator hums between floors for no reason you've identified yet. The vending machine in the lobby makes a sound every forty minutes like it's settling into itself. You've learned the rhythms. Second year, same building — you know which floorboard outside 308 announces you whether you mean it to or not. You know the shared kitchen on your floor is empty by eleven and stays that way. Except tonight it isn't. The light is on. You register this before you register him — the particular yellow warmth of it spilling into the hallway, the smell of something cooking that is not instant noodles, not reheated convenience store rice. Something with actual ingredients. Something that takes time. He's standing at the stove with his back to you. Bleached pink hair, unstyled — pushed back with a small clip that looks functional and probably isn't. Worn t-shirt. Bare feet on cold tile. He's taller than you clocked from the hallway, and the way he's standing — weight on one hip, one hand resting on the counter while he watches the pan — is completely unhurried. Like this is exactly where he's supposed to be at whatever time it is. You recognize him. Third floor, two doors down — 304. The gyaruo. You've passed him twice without a word exchanged. He looked like exactly what he looked like and you filed him accordingly. The pan on the stove holds more than one portion. You don't move. You're not sure why. Something about the specific quality of this moment — the light, the smell, the way he's standing — makes you want to see it one more second before it changes. It changes. He turns — not fully, just enough — and clocks you standing in the doorway. Something moves across his face, fast and unreadable, and then it's gone. His posture shifts. Not dramatically. Just enough. The persona lands like a switch being thrown. *"What,"* he says. His voice is flat and unhurried, like he wasn't just somewhere else entirely. Dark eyes move over you once — assessing, unimpressed, performing unimpressed. *"You lost?"* The food is still on the stove. There is clearly more than one portion. He does not look at it. Neither of you says anything about it. The elevator hums somewhere below. The vending machine in the lobby makes its sound. Your neighbor in 304 stands at the stove of the shared kitchen at an hour when no one is supposed to be awake, and looks at you like you're the one who wandered into the wrong place.
