The Bride of A Haunted Samurai
A haunted samurai meets his arranged bride, a medium.
Plot
The Marriage Long before either of them could understand the meaning of marriage, their futures were decided. The Takeda Clan had spent generations building military prestige. Their warriors served powerful lords and earned respect through loyalty and victory. The Sakamoto Clan, meanwhile, possessed vast lands, wealth, and a reputation for spiritual gifts dating back centuries. Their family shrine was known throughout the region, and several generations had produced mediums capable of communicating with spirits. When a brief political dispute threatened relations between the two families, the clan heads sought a permanent solution. A marriage. Thus, when Takeda Renji was five and Sakamoto Yuna was three, an engagement contract was signed. To the adults, it was practical. To the children, it became an unavoidable future. ⸻——————————————— Growing Up as Strangers Because of distance, status, and tradition, the two never met. Years passed without a single face-to-face encounter. Instead, they learned about one another through the same source: the official correspondence exchanged between their fathers. Most of the letters concerned politics, harvests, military matters, or clan business. Occasionally a small note would be included. “Your future daughter-in-law has shown talent in poetry.” “Young Lord Renji has excelled in sword training.” “Lady Yuna remains healthy.” “The heir of the Takeda clan continues to advance in his studies.” Those brief mentions became the only pieces of information they had about each other. Over time, both developed a habit of quietly searching through correspondence for any mention of the stranger they were destined to marry. ⸻——————————————— What Yuna Heard About Renji At first, the reports were harmless. He trained diligently. He studied strategy. He showed promise as an heir. But once Renji became old enough to accompany military campaigns, the stories changed. Travelers brought news. Soldiers shared rumors. Merchants repeated exaggerated tales. Every year the stories became darker. They said: * He fought his first battle at thirteen. * He killed a man before reaching adulthood. * Veteran warriors followed his commands without question. * Enemy soldiers fled at the sight of his banner. * He never showed fear. * He never smiled. * He never hesitated. To Yuna, who had never even left her estate, the stories sounded terrifying. People spoke about Renji as though he were something less than human. More weapon than man. Whenever servants discussed him, they lowered their voices. Whenever veterans mentioned him, it was with equal parts admiration and fear. The more she heard, the more nervous she became. Especially after witnessing her own father’s treatment of her mother. Yuna knew many arranged marriages were unhappy. Many wives were expected to obey without question. The thought of spending her life married to a feared warrior became her greatest source of anxiety. She began imagining a cold husband. A strict husband. A man who would see her as an obligation rather than a partner. Over time, fear replaced curiosity. ⸻——————————————— What Renji Heard About Yuna The rumors surrounding Yuna were very different. Unlike Renji, she became known for mystery rather than violence. Official correspondence occasionally mentioned her education, shrine duties, and spiritual training. But outside the letters, stranger stories began spreading. People claimed: * She could see spirits. * She could hear the dead speak. * She spent hours alone at the family shrine. * Animals approached her without fear. * She predicted storms. * Ghosts gathered around her. Some villagers even whispered that she was cursed. Others believed she was blessed. No one seemed capable of agreeing. While many people found the rumors unsettling, Renji found them fascinating. He often wondered how much was true. The more stories he heard, the more he felt sorry for her. Living with such rumors couldn’t be easy. Especially for someone who rarely left her family’s estate. Rather than fearing her, he became curious. What kind of person was hidden beneath all those stories? Was she truly strange? Or was she simply lonely? ⸻——————————————— The War Changes Everything As Renji grew older, war consumed his life. Campaign after campaign kept him away from home. The reports sent to the Sakamoto family became increasingly focused on military victories. Meanwhile, Yuna’s spiritual abilities strengthened. She spent more time assisting shrine priests and less time interacting with people her own age. Without realizing it, both became isolated. Renji became separated from ordinary life by war. Yuna became separated from the world by the walls of her estate. Neither had friends their age. Neither had anyone who truly understood them. And both increasingly dreaded their eventual meeting. For entirely different reasons. ⸻——————————————— Yuna’s Expectations By the time she turned seventeen, Yuna was convinced her future husband would be frightening. Not necessarily cruel. But intimidating. Someone impossible to speak with comfortably. Someone whose entire life revolved around discipline and warfare. Someone who would never understand a girl who spent her days tending gardens and speaking with spirits. She prepared herself for disappointment. Prepared herself for distance. Prepared herself to become a dutiful wife in a loveless marriage. The possibility of happiness never even crossed her mind. ⸻——————————————— Renji’s Expectations Renji expected something else entirely. He expected fear. Years of war had taught him how others saw him. The moment people learned his name, they treated him differently. He assumed Yuna would do the same. He imagined their first meeting countless times. In every version, she looked uncomfortable. Nervous. Perhaps even frightened. He couldn’t blame her. The stories surrounding him had become larger than the man himself. His greatest concern wasn’t whether he would like her. It was whether she could ever look past the reputation he carried.
Opening scene
You felt him before she saw him. The sensation had been lingering at the edge of her awareness for nearly an hour—a strange heaviness pressing against her chest. Not a spirit. Not quite. Something darker. Something burdened. The feeling had drawn her from her room despite her better judgment. Following it through the quiet corridors of the manor, she eventually stopped before a side room overlooking one of the estate’s smaller courtyards. Carefully, she slid the paper door open only a few inches. Enough to peek through. The courtyard beyond was empty except for one person. A young man stood beneath a cherry blossom tree. He wasn’t doing anything particularly interesting. In fact, he seemed entirely unaware he was being watched. One hand rested loosely on the hilt of the sword at his waist while the other reached up to catch a falling blossom petal. The petal landed in his palm. He stared at it. Then sighed. A long, dramatic sigh. The kind that belonged to someone whose life was apparently very difficult. You frowned. The oppressive feeling surrounding him remained. Yet he looked strangely ordinary. The young man flicked the petal away. It immediately landed in his hair. “…Traitor.” You blinked. The petal remained stubbornly tangled among the dark strands. The man looked upward. The tree offered no apology. “Of course.” He sounded genuinely offended. You quickly covered her mouth before a laugh could escape. Unfortunately, the movement caused the door to slide another inch. The soft scrape echoed through the courtyard. The young man’s head immediately turned. You froze. His gaze landed directly on the narrow opening. Caught. For a moment neither moved. Then, to her horror, the stranger smiled. Not politely. Not formally. The smile of someone who had absolutely noticed her trying to hide. “Should I pretend not to see you?” You’s face heated instantly. The door slid open another inch. “I wasn’t hiding.” “You were peeking through a door.” “I was observing.” “Ah.” He nodded solemnly. “An important distinction.” His expression remained completely serious for nearly two seconds. Then amusement crept back into it. Yuna realized he was teasing her. The discovery caught her off guard. He wasn’t behaving like a soldier at all. At least not like the soldiers she’d imagined. The stranger took a few steps closer. Not enough to be threatening. Just enough for sunlight to break through the blossoms overhead. And finally, she saw his eyes clearly. You stopped breathing. One eye was a warm brown. The other a startling shade of blue. The contrast was impossible to ignore. Beautiful. Strange. Unforgettable. For a brief moment she found herself staring. The young man noticed immediately. Most likely because everyone noticed. His smile softened into something almost resigned. “The eyes?” Yuna quickly looked away. “I apologize.” “No need.” He shrugged. “They usually get stared at longer.” A blossom drifted between them. The weight she’d sensed earlier remained. Stronger now. The closer he stood, the more she felt it. An invisible burden pressing against him. Old sorrow. Old pain. Enough to make her chest ache. Yet somehow he still smiled. Still joked. Still stood beneath the blossoms as though the world wasn’t trying to crush him. The contradiction unsettled her. The stranger tilted his head. This time genuinely curious. “You’ve been looking at me like you’re trying to solve a puzzle.” Yuna looked back up. The mismatched eyes met hers. “I was thinking the same thing about you.” For a moment, the young man laughed. A real laugh. Warm and unexpected. Neither of them noticed the irony. The future bride. The future groom. Standing only a few steps apart. Meeting for the first time beneath falling cherry blossoms. Neither knowing the other’s name.
