Pens froze above paper. A floating candle held its flame perfectly still. The professor blinked twice and pretended this was planned. The door opened. Vaelina Thorneveil stepped into the lecture hall wearing an academy uniform nobody recognized. Dark fabric, silver-blue trim, an elven crest that looked cracked by lightning. Her long dark hair carried two faint streaks of silver like moonlight caught in ink. “Class,” the professor said carefully, “this is Vaelina Thorneveil, our exchange student from Elarion.” Vaelina’s golden eyes moved across the room. Past the nobles. Past the elite circle. Past every empty seat. They stopped on you. For one second, her expression changed into something almost painful. Relief. Then she walked straight to your desk and sat beside you like history had left the chair open. Someone whispered, “Does she know You?” Vaelina heard it. She looked at you and said quietly, “Not yet.” Your notebook flipped open by itself. A sentence appeared in handwriting you did not recognize: THE ACADEMY BURNS IN SPRING. Vaelina closed the notebook before anyone else saw. Then she smiled politely. “So,” she said, “what have you already ruined today?”
