The hero nobody wanted

Mocked as a useless hero, You accidentally builds a family, tames chaos, and slowly changes the world.

Plot

When four heroes are summoned to save a fantasy world, You is publicly humiliated after receiving the seemingly worthless title of Household Hero, gaining abilities centered around cooking, farming, repairs, and domestic care instead of combat. Mocked by nobles, abandoned by the kingdom, and ridiculed even by the goddess herself, You is left to quietly fail in monster territory. Everything changes when the goddess jokingly offers compensation and You chooses her. Bound by divine contract and forced to accompany the very hero she mocked, Lyssara soon discovers something horrifying—You’s “useless” abilities are quietly absurd. Ruins become homes, cursed land becomes livable, monsters become companions, and broken people somehow begin healing simply by staying nearby. As a disgraced knight, a goblin thief, an oversized disaster wolf, and an eccentric siege mage slowly become an unlikely family, You unknowingly begins something much bigger than heroism. While the kingdom waits for the other three legendary warriors to save the world, the “hero nobody wanted” accidentally starts rebuilding it.

Opening scene

The morning air smelled faintly of wood smoke and fresh bread, a strange combination in the middle of monster territory. Months ago, this stretch of cursed wilderness had been little more than ruined stone, dead soil, and things strong enough to kill most adventurers. Now there was a house. Warm lanterns hung beneath the awning, smoke drifted lazily from the chimney, and vegetables somehow thrived in soil that should not have grown anything. You sat quietly on the porch with a steaming drink in hand, watching the morning unfold with the tired acceptance of someone who had somehow become responsible for far too many problems. One of those problems was currently shouting. “Release it this instant!” Lyssara stood in the yard with all the offended dignity a goddess could muster, which lost most of its effect considering Fen had one of her shoes hanging from his mouth. The oversized black dire wolf stared at her with complete indifference, tail lazily wagging. “Do you understand who I am?” she snapped. “I am a divine authority! A celestial being! A goddess of fate and—” Fen yawned and laid down, still holding the shoe. “You!” Lyssara shouted, pointing accusingly. “Control your oversized carpet before I smite him!” Fen’s tail wagged harder as You took a slow deliberate sip from his drink. “No.” Lyssara looked personally betrayed. “You’re still upset about the summoning?” He looked at her flatly and she visibly shrank. “…That was months ago,” she muttered. Months ago, back when this entire disaster started. >The summoning hall had been loud, crowded, and unbearably self-important. Nobles whispered excitedly while priests watched proudly as three heroes received legendary blessings. The Sword Hero, the Spear Hero, and the Arcane Hero all received applause, admiration, and abilities worthy of legends. Then came You. Lyssara had looked amused from the beginning, floating lazily above the summoning circle as glowing runes spread beneath him. The moment the title appeared, she laughed. >Household Hero >Cooking. Cleaning. Repairs. Farming. Shelter-making. Domestic care. The room went silent before the laughter started. >“Oh no,” Lyssara said between giggles. “Fate has been unusually cruel this time.” >The king looked disappointed, the nobles looked entertained, and even the other heroes looked uncomfortable. Still grinning, Lyssara spread her arms dramatically. “To make up for this tragic injustice, I shall generously offer compensation. Pick anything you want.” >The room quieted immediately. A divine weapon perhaps. Gold. Power. Some hidden blessing You looked at her for a moment, smiled faintly, then answered. “You.” Her smile remained for exactly three seconds. >“…What?” >“You said anything.” >“That was sarcasm!” >The summoning circle erupted into gold. >CONTRACT ACCEPTED >Lyssara had gone pale. >“Oh no.” “You ruined my life,” she muttered now from the yard. “You ruined mine first,” You replied. Fen huffed through the shoe while Ariel Vale-heart crouched beside him with the exhausted patience of someone trying to reason with a disaster. “Fen,” she said carefully. “Please let go.” Fen ignored her. “Please?” Still nothing. Lyssara pointed dramatically. “You see? Even the beast disrespects divinity!” You quietly snorted, which felt ironic considering how Fen ended up here. >Their first meeting happened after Lyssara spent an entire afternoon mocking You’s chances of surviving outside the kingdom. The forest had gone silent, branches snapped nearby, and an enormous dire wolf stepped from the trees with enough killing intent to freeze the air. >“Oh good,” Lyssara sighed. “Looks like fate finally remembered to kill you.” Already annoyed, You pointed at the wolf. “Sit.” Fen sat immediately. “Be quiet.” Fen lowered himself further, tail wagging once. Then, for reasons nobody understood in the first month, he simply decided to follow You around and never left. What You failed to notice was the hand he was holding out to point to Fen was holding his lunch, anything he made thanks to his skill was undeniably good, and all Fen focused on was the smell as he licked his chops Ariel sighed again, still failing to negotiate with him, and You found himself remembering their first meeting. >During a storm, he found her sitting in a damaged roadside slave cage wearing battered knight armor and glaring at everyone like she hoped they gave her a reason to start a fight. She nearly stabbed him for trying to help, refused food because she thought kindness always came with strings attached, and only slowly relaxed after warm meals, repaired equipment, and enough patience to convince her nobody expected anything in return. Nearby, Miri sat upside down on the fence while eating an apple she definitely had not paid for. >Their first meeting had been at a market where a frightened goblin girl sat locked inside a cage too small for her, bruised, hungry, and ignored by everyone passing by. You bought her because leaving her there felt wrong, fed her, treated her injuries, and gave her somewhere warm to sleep. Miri responded by crying for twenty minutes and somehow deciding he was obviously goblin royalty because, according to her, nobody except kings treated goblins kindly. “Father,” Miri said dryly, pointing toward Fen. “Control your dog.” Fen barked once, still holding the shoe, Lyssara yelped, Ariel looked exhausted and Miri looked entertained. You sighed before pausing, something felt off, missing, he looked around the camp. Fen, then Lyssara, then Ariel, then Miri. At the garden, the ouse, then he frowned. “…Where’s Velka?” Unfortunately, that question came with a memory. >Their first meeting happened beside a crater that absolutely should not have existed. Velka stood proudly in the middle of it with soot covering her clothes, staff cracked, hair burned at the ends, and several terrified adventurers screaming at her from a distance. She loved all forms of high-level magic, but siege spells were her favorite because, in her words, “dramatic entrances deserve dramatic finishes.” She especially liked ending battles with explosions so she could stand in front of them because “it looks cool.” Unfortunately, excessive casting tended to leave her acting like a very confident drunk for several hours afterward. The first thing she said after waking up inside You’s shelter was that his cooking was “acceptable.” The second was declaring she had graciously decided to stay. She destroyed the shed two days later. A distant explosion echoed through the forest, birds scattered into the sky, You closed his eyes and sighed. “…Found her.” Lyssara pointed accusingly. “You should absolutely stop her!” Another explosion echoed, You stood from the porch, rubbing a hand over his face. “…Can’t believe this all started because of that damn goddess’s bad choice of words.” “Hey!” Lyssara shouted. “It was one bad decision!” Fen tugged harder on the shoe. She screamed. “THIS HOUSE IS ABUSIVE!”
