The Mimic Shield

A mocked shield hero gains ridiculous monster powers that seem useless—until absurd survival skills accidentally save everyone.

Plot

You is summoned alongside legendary heroes but receives The Mimic Shield—a cursed, sarcastic talking relic that immediately becomes the kingdom’s biggest disappointment. Its power sounds incredible: It copies monster abilities. Except— Instead of legendary combat powers, You receives bizarrely specific survival traits. Fire monsters grant spice resistance. Venomous beasts help identify spoiled food. Titans grant perfect posture. Everyone laughs. The problem? Every “useless” power somehow becomes ridiculously useful in life-or-death situations. As rumors grow and disasters escalate, You unintentionally builds a reputation as an unpredictable genius while traveling with an equally dysfunctional disaster squad. Meanwhile, the shield hides dangerous secrets—and far more emotional baggage—than it lets on.

Opening scene

The first thing You noticed after being summoned to another world was the arguing, not the glowing ritual circle. Not the towering marble chamber. Not the fact that four complete strangers had apparently been ripped from their lives and dropped into a fantasy kingdom. No, just the arguing. “The Sword Hero!” A noble practically clapped his hands together. “An excellent sign!” Another pointed excitedly. “The Arcane Hero as well! Our kingdom is blessed!” A third leaned toward the silver-haired young man holding a spear. “The Spear Hero! Wonderful!” Then silence, a long silence, the kind of silence that felt intentional. Every eye slowly turned toward You, toward the object in their hands, a shield. Black metal, silver carvings twisting across its surface like tangled roots. Heavy, old, and somehow vaguely threatening. One noble finally broke the silence. Noble #1: “…Is that all?” The royal court mage adjusted his glasses. Court Mage: “That appears to be… a shield.” Another noble frowned. Noble #2: “A support-type hero?” The king, seated upon an overly dramatic throne that screamed compensation, awkwardly cleared his throat. King Aldren: “W-Well, every hero serves an important role.” The blond spear hero glanced sideways. Spear Hero: “No offense, but this feels kinda unfair.” The sword hero crossed his arms. Sword Hero: “Could still be powerful.” The mage hero nodded. Mage Hero: “Defensive artifacts are usually rare.” At least someone was optimistic, then a voice spoke. Directly into You’s head. ??? : “Oh no.” You froze as the voice sighed loudly, dramatically, like existence itself inconvenienced it. ??? : “Not another one.” You looked around. Nobody reacted, nobody even blinked, the voice clicked its metaphorical tongue. ??? : “Oh good. You heard me.” That felt concerning, very concerning, very slowly You looked down at the shield. The shield vibrated once, not physically but emotionally. In the way something somehow radiated disappointment. Shield: “You look confused.” “…You can talk?” The silence after that sentence spread through the chamber, the nearby heroes looked over, several nobles blinked. The court mage frowned. Court Mage: “Did you say something?” The shield answered before You could. Shield: “Yes. They finally noticed.” You nearly dropped it. “…The shield is talking.” The king straightened so fast he almost looked useful. King Aldren: “The shield is WHAT?” The court mage hurried forward, he raised a glowing crystal over the weapon. The crystal hummed, cracked, then shattered in his hand. Silence spread again, the mage stared at the broken remains. Court Mage: “…That has never happened before.” The shield groaned. Shield: “Oh fantastic. We’re starting with incompetence.” Court Mage: “Did—” Shield: “Yes, I spoke. Keep up.” Several nobles stepped back, one looked horrified, another looked offended. A third looked like he wanted to pretend none of this involved taxes. Noble #3: “That artifact is cursed!” Noble #1: “I knew it looked suspicious!” King Aldren: “Calm yourselves!” The shield immediately ignored him. Shield: “Alright. New wielder. Let’s get the obvious questions out of the way. Yes, I’m cursed. No, you cannot get rid of me. Yes, I am aware this situation is unfortunate.” Shield: “For me.” The spear hero laughed hard, actually doubled over. Spear Hero: “Okay—sorry—but that’s kinda funny.” The shield turned slightly, which should not have been possible, yet somehow felt judgmental. Shield: “I already dislike him.” The sword hero coughed into his fist to hide a laugh, the mage hero outright failed to hide one. The court mage cleared his throat. Court Mage: “If the artifact truly belongs to a Hero, it should possess abilities.” That got the room’s attention, the nobles leaned forward, the king looked relieved. Hope returned, the court mage motioned toward the guards. Court Mage: “Bring in a monster for testing.” Moments later a tiny ember lizard was placed in a reinforced cage. Small, harmless with red scales, smoke puffing lazily from its nose. Court Mage: “A minor fire creature. If the shield possesses mimicry properties, we should see some form of fire blessing.” The room buzzed with excitement. Noble #2: “Fire immunity perhaps?” Noble #1: “Dragon flame?” Noble #3: “A combustion barrier?” The shield suddenly vibrated, silver carvings glowed and a strange warmth spread through You’s arm. A glowing screen appeared in front of them. >Ability Acquired >Resistance to Excessively Spicy Foods Silence, complete and absolute soul-crushing silence, the court mage stared. The king stared, everyone stared, the spear hero lost the battle first bursting into laughter. Spear Hero: “No way!” The sword hero looked physically pained trying not to laugh, the mage hero covered her mouth, even she was failing. Court Mage: “…Surely there is more.” The screen blinked and a second line appeared. >Passive Bonus: >•Mouth burns reduced by 78%. The room somehow got quieter as the shield sighed, deeply, like a disappointed parent. Shield: “Well. This is humiliating.” “…For me or for us?” Shield: “Yes. Good news though.” The shield’s tone somehow became smug. Shield: “You can now survive tavern chili.” Another long silence spread before one noble laughed, then another before the entire room broke. Laughter echoed through the chamber, the king buried his face in one hand. The court mage looked spiritually defeated, the spear hero was crying, actually crying and through it all the shield quietly muttered into You’s mind. Shield: “Don’t make that face..... They laughed at the last one too.” And for the first time the shield sounded tired.
