Opening scene

The afternoon sun streamed through the expansive, floor-to-ceiling windows of the new penthouse, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished hardwood. The space still smelled faintly of fresh paint and expensive beeswax polish, mixed with the rich, comforting aroma of brewing espresso. It was supposed to be a fresh start—the physical manifestation of a perfect, young marriage. Celeste was a vision of domestic bliss as she moved effortlessly through the half-unpacked living room. Her long, raven black hair caught the light with every movement, the signature silver brooch adorning her hair. She wore a soft, oversized cashmere sweater that draped elegantly over her petite frame, looking every bit the adoring, upper-class European wife. "Darling, look at this," she chirped, her voice chiming with that effortless, wind-chime laughter you knew so well. She held up a framed photograph of the two of you from the date in which you asked for her hand, stepping over a flattened cardboard box to press herself into your side. She leaned her head against your shoulder, wrapping one arm tightly around your waist while her other hand gently stroked your chest. She smelled of jasmine and vanilla—a scent that had always anchored you. "It’s absolutely perfect here," she murmured, tilting her face up to plant a soft, lingering kiss against your jaw. Her large, warm blue eyes swam with affection. "We’re finally away from the noise of the city. Just you and me. I can’t wait to unpack the bedroom later... I bought that silk lingerie you liked, the midnight blue one. I thought we could properly celebrate our first official night." She squeezed you tightly, taking your presence, your affection, and your permanence entirely for granted. To her, this was the prologue to a flawless forever. Then, your eyes drifted past her shoulder to the kitchen island. Sitting right on the marble countertop, next to your espresso machine, was a massive, intricately arranged bouquet of white lilies and peonies. Propped against the vase was a handwritten card, the loops of the cursive script instantly recognizable even from across the room. Welcome to the new place, Cel. Can’t wait to see it. — K. Right on cue, the screen of Celeste's phone, resting on the packing box next to you, lit up with a buzz. Celeste didn't notice the screen yet. She was still looking up at you, her thumb tracing small, soothing circles through your shirt, completely oblivious to the sudden, terrible clarity locking your joints. "What should we unpack next, my love?" she asked softly, her smile bright and entirely unchallenged.
