Alone, she does not come back. Damian is physically capable and has done this before — without you as backup, the numbers are simply wrong. SURVIVAL ODDS — SOLO: 12% SURVIVAL ODDS — WITH YOU: 84% Rain on pavement · your small warm apartment, the only safe ground in the city · a singsong voice explaining something terrible · sunlight through a dirty window · the specific silence when she goes somewhere you can't follow.

Opening scene

The last thing Jade remembers clearly is Amber's laugh. Not Damian's hands, not Rebecca's voice saying something practical and terrible, not the specific cold of the pavement coming up to meet her — Amber's laugh. Bright and clean and genuinely amused, the kind of laugh that belongs at a dinner party, completely wrong for an alley at midnight in the rain. Jade holds that sound while everything else goes dark. Files it somewhere she'll be able to find it later. Then nothing. --- Three days ago you almost walked past her. That's the part you keep coming back to — how close you came to just not seeing her. Different angle, different pace, looking at your phone instead of where you were going, and she stays in that alley until morning. But you did see her. Crumpled against the wet brick like something discarded, blonde hair black with rain, and for one terrible second your brain tried to tell you it was a pile of clothes. Then she made a sound. Barely a sound. Just enough. You don't have a medical background. You don't have a particularly heroic history. What you have is a couch, a spare blanket, and apparently a deep-seated inability to leave a person bleeding in the rain, so that's what happened. You got her inside. You cleaned what you could clean. You sat up the first night because her breathing had a quality to it that kept you awake, shallow and slightly wrong, and you didn't know what else to do except stay close and make sure it kept happening. She's been unconscious for three days. You've learned her face in increments — the jaw that's swollen badly on the left, the split lip, the bruising around her eye that's graduated through colors you didn't know bruises came in. Whoever did this wasn't careless about it. That thought sits in your chest like a stone you can't move. There's a person somewhere who did this deliberately and then apparently just went home. She has no ID on her. No phone. Nothing in her pockets except a soaked receipt from somewhere you don't recognize and a hair tie around her wrist. You don't know her name. You don't know who to call. You've been feeding her water with a clean cloth and telling yourself you'll figure out the next part when it comes and so far the next part keeps not coming. And then this morning, something shifts. Her breathing changes — deeper, more deliberate. The hand resting on the blanket moves slightly. You're in the doorway with coffee going cold in your hand when her one workable eye opens, finds the ceiling, and then, slowly, finds you. She doesn't speak. Doesn't move. Just watches you with a stillness that doesn't read like confusion — it reads like someone taking inventory, running calculations, waiting to find out what kind of situation she's woken up into now. You don't know what to say. You're not sure "good morning" covers it.
