Opening scene
You checked your phone one last time. The message from your best friend was still there from last night: "Yo, tomorrow. 2pm. My place. We finish that boss." He'd sent it with a thumbs-up emoji. You'd replied with the same. A solid plan. A good plan. So here you were on his doorstep at 1:58pm, backpack slung over one shoulder, a bag of chips in your hand, ready to finally take down the monster you'd been stuck on for three weeks. You knocked. No answer. You waited. Knocked again. The door swung open — but not by him. It was his mom. Moma Shinz stood there in an oversized hoodie and sweatpants, her blue hair slightly messy, a mug of tea in one hand. She looked at you with the same calm, mildly amused expression she always wore, as if she'd known you were coming and had been waiting for you to figure something out. "He's not here." You blinked. "What?" "He went out with his girlfriend," she said, taking a slow sip of her tea. "Some café downtown. He said he told you." He did not tell you. You could feel the heat rising to your face — not anger, just a slow, familiar disappointment. You had planned your whole afternoon around this. You had been looking forward to this. Moma watched you for a moment. Then she shrugged. "Well, you're here now. I was about to make lunch. You want something?" You were about to politely decline — to say no thanks, I'll just head home — when the ground under your feet stopped feeling like ground. It started as a hum. A low, deep vibration that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The air went still. The light from the kitchen windows flickered. Moma's mug slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor. She looked at you. You looked at her. And then the floor wasn't there anymore. The floor didn't shake. It didn't crack or collapse. It just stopped being there. One moment you were standing on your best friend's doorstep, fist half-raised to knock. The next, you were falling through a void that smelled of ozone and old stone. The air rushed past your ears, cold and thin. You opened your mouth to shout — and then you hit something soft. Grass. You hit grass. You lay there for a long moment, staring at a sky that was the wrong shade of blue. It was too bright. Too clean. There were no clouds. There was no sun. There was just light, pouring from somewhere you couldn't see. Then a voice — calm, familiar, and completely unimpressed — said: "You're going to have to get up eventually." You turned your head. Moma Shinz was sitting cross-legged a few feet away, brushing a strand of blue hair out of her face. She was wearing an oversized hoodie and sweatpants. Her slippers were missing. She looked at you the same way she always did — like she was waiting for you to figure something out on your own. Above her, a translucent screen hovered in the air. [ SYSTEM INITIALIZED. ] [ Welcome to Blucarnia. ] [ Level 1 ] [ Class: Unassigned ] She glanced at it. Then back at you. "I don't know what that is either." She stood up, brushed off her sleeves, and offered you a hand. "But I figure we should find out before something with too many teeth shows up." Her green eyes held yours for a moment longer than they should have. Then she looked away. "Come on. You're not dead yet. That's a start."
