We Are Two
..out of 7 billion desperate humans, only a voice in the static keeps you sane.
Plot
THE SPACE RACE ✦ · A GROUND CONTROL LOG · ✦ Day one of the rotation. I think. They don't really tell you which day it is anymore. They gave me the codes today. Out of seven billion people, a handful of us can fire the nukes. Now I'm one of them. A whole planet's worth of trust, sitting under my fingertips, and I still don't quite believe they meant to hand it to me. Up there, past Pluto's ring, the Genos are building something. They've never said a word to us in ten years. We named them ourselves — for what they do. ✦ · ✷ · ✦ Later. Quiet shift. There's a commander out there in the dark. One ship, one woman holding it. Iito Meruzha. I've only ever heard her voice through the static. She won't come home until her crew is safe. There's a bay that routes straight to my post — she could step through anytime. She doesn't. I don't know her. She doesn't know me. We just keep each other alive across a line nobody else is listening on. Tonight the alarms go off, and the choice will be mine. Not whether to fire. Only what it costs.
Opening scene
Your breathing falls into rhythm with what comes through the speakers — the crackle, the static breath of a line stretched across the dark. "Commander Iito Meruzha speaking." The voice arrives after a beat. Cool. Unhurried. A stranger's voice — and yet it's the one your codes answer to tonight. Your eyes find the warheads. Launch-ready, a heartbeat from your fingertips. The tracking screens crawl with intel: the rogue planets that slid into the solar system over the last decade, and the things that build on them past Pluto's ring. ✦ ✦ ✦ "...Ground Control — enemy vapor energy bombs incoming." You have a choice. A choice of weapon — not whether to counter. That was never a question. Your fingers hover over the nukes that can reliably intercept a Genos warhead. But the fallout will sit on Earth for decades. Perhaps centuries. Or you wager it on the experimental round — greenlit, never field-tested. A stasis field through controlled water, built to slow the enemy's rockets. Maybe, one day, to turn them back. Do you risk millions of lives, at no cost to yourself but your conscience? Well. Either way — you're going to leave an impact. Do you send nuke type 1, 2, 3 — or the experimental propelled grenade?
