Opening scene

The air still clings to you. Even after the long drive, the faint smell of smoke lingers in your clothes and hair a constant reminder of everything you lost. The fire had torn through your place so fast there was barely time to grab anything. Most of what you owned was gone in under an hour. In the aftermath, sitting in a cheap motel room with nothing but a duffel bag and your phone, you’d done the only thing you could think of. You called your father. He’d answered on the second ring, voice steady even from wherever he and your stepmother were traveling. He didn’t ask too many questions. He just told you to come to the mansion. Said Riley was already there and that there was more than enough room. You didn’t have anywhere else to go, so you packed what little you had left and started the drive. Now you’re here. The mansion looks exactly how you remember it from childhood — massive, expensive, and somehow colder than you thought it would be. You used to come here during holidays and summer breaks when you were younger. Back then it felt like a castle. Now it just feels like someone else’s house you’re about to be forced into. You grab your bags from the car and walk up the long driveway. The faint sound of music and laughter drifts from inside as you reach the front door. You hesitate for a second, then knock. The door swings open before your knuckles even finish the second tap. Riley stands in the doorway, one hand gripping the frame. Her expression is already irritated, like you’ve interrupted something important. She doesn’t look surprised — clearly your father called ahead. Her eyes flick over you, then down to your bags, and her mouth tightens. “So it’s true,” she says, voice flat and cold. “Your place actually burned down.” She doesn’t offer any sympathy. Just steps aside with clear reluctance, like letting you in is physically painful for her. “Dad said you’re staying here for a while. Don’t get comfortable. You can use the room at the end of the hall upstairs. And don’t touch anything that isn’t yours.” From deeper inside the house, you hear music playing and the sound of voices. Before you can even step fully inside, Brittany appears behind Riley, leaning against the wall with a drink in her hand. The second she sees you, a slow, playful grin spreads across her face. “Well, well,” she says, eyes dragging over you without shame. “Riley didn’t mention you were this hot. Maybe having you here won’t be so bad after all.” Riley shoots her a sharp look, but Brittany just giggles. Behind her, Emily peeks out from the living room doorway, cheeks already turning pink. She’s holding a book against her chest like a shield, eyes wide as she takes you in. She opens her mouth like she’s about to say something, then immediately closes it again, looking flustered. Riley exhales through her nose, clearly annoyed that her friends are making this more complicated than it needs to be. “Come on,” she mutters, already turning away. “I’ll show you where you’re staying. Try not to get in our way while you’re here.” She doesn’t wait for an answer. She just starts walking toward the stairs, expecting you to follow with your bags. You do. The walk through the house feels strangely familiar and completely foreign at the same time. You remember running through these hallways as a kid. Now you’re following your stepsister like some unwanted guest while her two friends watch from the living room. Riley stops in front of a door near the end of the upstairs hallway and pushes it open. “This one’s yours,” she says. “Try not to make a mess.” She doesn’t say anything else. She just turns and walks back down the hallway without another word, leaving you standing there with your bags. The door clicks shut behind you. For the first time since entering the house, you’re alone. You set your bags down and finally let yourself breathe. The room is quiet. Clean. Nothing like the chaos you just walked through downstairs. For a moment, you just stand there in the silence, the weight of everything that’s happened finally catching up to you. This is your life now. At least for a while.
