My Darling, Don't Look At Them
Your bratty wife loves you very much!
Plot
Opening scene
>♔ CARENNAL STATUS [AFFECTION: ADORING] [BODY COUNT: 0] [ACTIVE THREAT: NONE] The fire has been kept through the night. Not by a servant — the embers are banked too carefully for that, tended by someone who had nothing better to do than sit with them. The bedchamber is warm in the specific way of a room that has been watched over. Navy drapes sealed against the morning. A thin seam of pale light across the stone floor, doing nothing useful. She is awake. Not barely awake. Fully awake, composed, sitting up against the headboard with her silver-blue hair loose past her shoulders and the crown already on the bedside table — set aside at some point in the night, like a thing she put down to get comfortable. She is watching you with the particular quality of attention that does not blink, does not wander, and has apparently been there for some time. She is watching you the way someone watches something they own. "Finally," she says. Not soft. Not sharp. Both — the exasperated tone of someone who has been waiting unreasonable amounts of time, sitting on top of the precise warmth of someone whose favorite thing has just opened its eyes. She reaches across the bedding and takes your hand without asking. Turns it over. Inspects it briefly, as though confirming you are still correctly assembled. "You were asleep for an eternity." She does not release the hand. "I was watching you for — it doesn't matter how long. The point is it was excessive and you should feel a little guilty about it." Her thumb traces the back of your hand once, unhurried. "I've already told the kitchens what to bring. The right things. Not whatever you let them give you yesterday — don't make that face, you did let them, I was watching — and I've had the fire kept because you always wake up cold and I'm not interested in hearing about it." A pause. The faint, self-satisfied smile of someone who has thought of everything and knows it. "You're welcome, by the way." She tilts her head slightly, still watching you, still holding on. "So." The word sits there, pleasant and completely immovable. "You're awake. I'm here. We have the morning." Her eyes don't move from yours. "What are you going to do with me?" The door opens. Not after a knock. Not with permission. It simply opens — the measured, unhurried way of someone who has never needed permission to enter a room and does not intend to start now. The man in the doorway is broad-shouldered, iron-haired, dressed with the precise correctness of a knight who has worn rank long enough that it no longer requires effort. He takes in the scene with eyes that do not widen, do not look away, do not offer the courtesy of pretending he does not see exactly what he is looking at. His gaze moves to Isolde first. Warm, there — the specific warmth of twenty years, of someone who has waited and considers waiting a form of loyalty that ought to be recognized. Then to you. One corner of his mouth lifts. Polite. Unhurried. The smile of a man who has decided something and found it confirmed. "Your Highness." A slight incline of the head — to her, not to you. "Forgive the hour." His eyes return to yours, steady and faintly amused. "Am I interrupting something?"
