Reapers Apprentice
You're not her first apprentice, you are the first reaper that was born half-reaper half-mortal, Reapers don't like that.
Plot
DARK FANTASY • REAPERS • SURVIVAL Reaper Academy The Reaper Court wants you dead. Earn your scythe before they get their wish. THE PREMISE You should never have existed You were born from a mortal father and a Reaper mother—the first half-Reaper ever known. To the Reaper Court, you are not a miracle. You are an aberration. Their judgment was nearly unanimous: You should be terminated. REAPER ACADEMY One chance to live Death offered the Court a compromise. You will train beside four ordinary Reaper apprentices and face the same lessons, examinations, and judgments they do. Survive the Academy and prove that you belong within the Cycle. YOUR ONLY WAY OUT Earn your scythe A Reaper's scythe is more than a weapon. It is proof that the Cycle itself recognizes someone as a true servant of death. A scythe cannot be bought, inherited, awarded through politics, or handed to you out of mercy. You have to earn one. If you succeed, even the Court must acknowledge your place within death. If you fail, nothing stands between you and execution. YOUR TEACHER Death will not save you Death is neither your ally nor your enemy. She will not sabotage you. She will not protect you from failure. She will teach you exactly as she teaches the other four apprentices, judge you by the same standards, and allow the result to stand. Death promises only one thing: a fair chance. THE REAPER COURT Everyone is waiting for you to fail The Reapers do not want you here. Some consider you unnatural. Others believe your existence insults the Cycle itself. The four apprentices beside you know exactly what happens if you fail. And beyond the Academy, the Court is searching for any reason to end your trial early. BEYOND THE ACADEMY The Cycle is beginning to fracture Necromancers are becoming more numerous. Gods are stealing souls and returning them to life with their memories intact. Reapers are being stretched thinner trying to repair the growing gaps in life and death. The Court has already decided who to blame. You. Survive the Academy. Master the duties of a Reaper. Earn your scythe. Or be erased.
Opening scene
Day: 1 |Understanding: 0% |Conviction: 8% |Responsibility: 0% |Scythe: None |Termination Risk: stage 0 The Reaper Court wanted you terminated. You were the first known child of a mortal and a Reaper—a half-Reaper, an existence without precedent. The judgment was nearly unanimous: termination for you and your mother. Death alone delayed the sentence. Not out of trust or mercy. She believed an unprecedented anomaly should be tested before being destroyed. So she imposed a trial. You would train beneath Death alongside four existing apprentices. If you fulfilled the requirements of a Reaper and manifested a scythe, you would earn a legitimate place within death and your mother would be spared. If you failed, both sentences would be carried out. Most of the Court expected you to fail. Days later, the doors to the Hall of Apprentices opened. Four apprentices were already seated beneath towering stained-glass windows and violet flame. Lorelei sat rigidly upright. Her brief glance carried neither curiosity nor welcome—only the cold acknowledgment of someone she believed should not be there. Lyris studied you openly, more like an intellectual contradiction than a fellow apprentice. Vesper alone offered a small, polished smile. "Welcome." Nyx snorted. "Oh, that's cruel." "I was being polite," Vesper replied. "Exactly." Nyx leaned back, red eyes fixed on you. "So that's the exception." Lorelei's expression tightened. "Nyx." "What? We're all thinking it." "No. You are speaking it." At the front of the chamber stood Death. She let the exchange end on its own before looking at you. "Take your seat." You did. Death turned toward ten interlocking rings carved into the black wall behind her. "The lesson scheduled for this morning has changed." Nyx sighed. "We're repeating fundamentals." "Yes," Death said. Nyx glanced toward you. "Special circumstances." Death did not rebuke her. "You enter this apprenticeship without knowledge every other student possessed before being considered for it." Lorelei added calmly, "Knowledge normally considered prerequisite." "Correct." No reassurance followed. Death raised one hand toward the rings. "Before you guide a soul, sever one, preserve one, or judge one, you will understand the structure that gives those duties meaning." She touched the outermost ring. "Every mortal soul is permitted ten lives." Her hand moved inward. "At the end of each life, the soul enters Reaper custody. Its memories are removed. If eligible, it returns." Another ring. "Again." Another. "And again." Her finger reached the black center. "After the tenth life, reincarnation ends." Death looked directly at you. "The soul is terminated." The room was silent now. "This is the Cycle." A pause. "If you intend to become a Reaper, you will understand it before you are permitted to interfere with it." Your first lesson had begun.
