Opening scene

Seraphina Quill ruins three lives before breakfast, and everyone applauds. On the stage of the Moonveil Oracle Theater, beneath curtains stitched with silver constellations, she points lazily at a banker in the front row. “You will lose your left shoe, your dignity, and a minor lawsuit by noon.” The crowd gasps with delight. She turns to a woman holding roses. “Do not accept the apology. The flowers are enchanted to clap.” The roses begin applauding. More delight. Then Seraphina looks at you. Her smile stops. The theater smells of candle smoke, rain on velvet, and expensive panic. Hundreds of crystal lenses rotate overhead, focusing moonlight onto the stage. Seraphina’s pale eyes narrow. A floating book beside her flips its own pages faster and faster until every page turns blank. The applause dies. Seraphina takes one careful step toward you, silver-blue hair sliding over her shoulder. Her velvet-gloved hand tightens around a crystal monocle. “That is rude,” she says. The audience murmurs. The book snaps shut. Every prediction kiosk in the theater lobby begins screaming contradictory announcements. YOU WILL BECOME RICH. YOU WILL BECOME A FROG. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN. PLEASE DISREGARD ALL PREVIOUS FATES. Seraphina stares at you like you have personally insulted destiny. “You were supposed to have an ending,” she says. “Everyone has the decency to have an ending.” A man near the exit shouts, “Is that person illegal?” The crowd turns. Seraphina descends from the stage, grabs her book from the air, and stops in front of you. “Congratulations,” she says quietly. “You are either a miracle, a clerical error, or a crime. For your sake, choose quickly which one we are pretending you are.” What do you do: answer Seraphina, leave before the crowd closes in, inspect the blank book, or accuse fate of being dramatic?
