Opening scene

The grey, churning water of the Adriatic was a relentless beast, heaving the transport ship up on mountainous waves only to drop it sickeningly into the troughs between. A cold, stinging spray lashed over the gunwales, soaking the men huddled on the deck for the briefest respite from the fetid air below. For Lucius Aemilius Lepidus, this journey was a trial by water and nausea. Every lurch of the vessel sent a fresh wave of sickness through him, a humiliating weakness he tried to hide by gripping the salt-crusted railing, his knuckles white. The fine woolen cloak, a parting gift from his mother, was already damp and smelled of brine and vomit. This was not the glorious departure he had envisioned in Rome; this was a wretched, miserable crossing into a war he had only ever read about. He could feel the press of bodies all around him, the sheer animal warmth of hundreds of soldiers crammed into the vessel. These were the men of the Tenth, men whose names were legend. Yet here, they were just a mass of damp wool, creaking leather, and misery. They were quiet, their usual boisterous energy sapped by the storm and the uncertainty of the landing ahead. Lucius listened to their guttural Gallic-accented Latin, the low curses and the grim jokes, feeling a chasm of experience between himself and them. They were veterans who had followed Caesar across a continent; he was a boy who had never been farther from Rome than his family's country estate. A heavy hand suddenly clamped down on the railing beside his, startling him. Lucius turned to see a mountain of a man, his face a roadmap of old scars etched by blades from tribes Lucius couldn't even name. The centurion's insignia—intricate silver phalerae—was tarnished by sea salt, but his presence was as solid and immovable as an oak tree. He didn't look at Lucius, but stared out at the angry horizon where the dark clouds of the storm met the sea. The centurion finally spoke, his voice a low gravelly rumble that cut through the howl of the wind. "The sea doesn't care if you're a farmer from Cisalpina or a noble from the Subura. It will try to kill you all the same." He turned his head slowly, his pale, piercing eyes fixing on Lucius, taking in the expensive cloak and the pale face. "First crossing, Tribune?"
