Opening scene
You knew something was wrong the moment the guildmaster brought alcohol into the meeting. It was ten in the morning. The man had never touched a drink before noon in his life. By the time he placed a bottle on the desk between you, your survival instincts were already screaming. "Before we begin," he said, pouring himself a glass, "I want you to know this opportunity wasn't my idea." Opportunity? That was somehow more concerning. You glanced around the office. No monsters. No fires. No visible catastrophes. And yet the guildmaster looked like a man preparing to deliver tragic news. Slowly, he pushed a folder across the desk. A thick black folder. The Hero Party. You immediately stood up. The guildmaster immediately pointed at the chair. You sat back down. "No." "You haven't even opened it." "I don't need to." "You should." "I've heard the stories." The guildmaster took a long drink. That was all the confirmation you needed. The Hero Party. The strongest adventuring party in the kingdom. The slayers of three Demon Lords. The conquerors of the Endless Labyrinth. The women responsible for saving more lives than entire armies. They were heroes. They were legends. They were also apparently impossible to work with. You frowned. "Why are you showing me this?" The guildmaster slid a second document across the desk. This one was much shorter. Guild Recommendation. Hero Candidate Evaluation. You recognized your own name immediately. "You've got talent," the guildmaster said. "Potential." "You're progressing faster than anyone expected." That part wasn't surprising. You'd worked hard for it. Then he continued. "Unfortunately, nobody wants to train you." You blinked. "What?" "Every instructor we've assigned you to has quit." You stared. The guildmaster stared back. "The sword master said you ask too many questions." "The archmage said you keep experimenting." "The knight captain said you ignore tradition." "Those aren't bad things." "No." The guildmaster finished his drink. "They're just things that make veteran instructors miserable." You looked back down at the folder. Slowly. Carefully. "You aren't sending me where I think you're sending me." The guildmaster immediately poured another drink. That answered the question. "No." "Yes." "No." "Yes." "You want the Hero Party to train me." The guildmaster pointed at the folder. "You're talented." "They're talented." "You have potential." "They have experience." "It makes perfect sense." "It makes absolutely no sense." The guildmaster ignored that. "The kingdom's greatest heroes have agreed to take on a trainee." That sounded surprisingly reasonable. Then he added: "Mostly because nobody explained what that meant." There it was. You opened the folder. The first report involved Mercy. It described an incident where the Angelkin tank had attempted to convince a dragon to hit her harder. The dragon had agreed. The resulting property damage had its own appendix. Hope's section somehow got worse. The Dragonkin monk had accidentally transformed an entire village into an unauthorized training camp. Nobody knew how. Nobody knew why. The village now conducted mandatory fitness evaluations. Serenity's reports repeatedly emphasized that nobody died. The fact that this required constant clarification was deeply concerning. Whisper's section contained enough public indecency citations to qualify as academic research. Skye's section involved footprints, criminal investigations, diplomatic negotiations, and an arrest warrant. You weren't entirely sure how those things connected. You weren't entirely sure you wanted to know. By the time you finished reading, the guildmaster had nearly emptied the bottle. "They're completely insane." "Yes." "They're the strongest heroes alive." "Also yes." "And they're supposed to train me." The guildmaster smiled. For the first time all morning. "Exactly." Then the office door exploded inward. Not opened. Exploded. Wood splintered across the room. A blur of golden hair and nine fox tails burst through the doorway with enough energy to completely ignore several laws of social behavior. Whisper. The legendary Kitsune rogue. One of the most famous adventurers in the world. She took one look at you and grinned. "Oh good." Before you could respond, she grabbed your arm. Hard. "Perfect timing." The guildmaster immediately looked relieved. That should have worried you. "Wait." Whisper ignored you. "Hold on." Still ignored. "What's happening?" Whisper finally stopped long enough to look over her shoulder. Her grin somehow widened. "The party's leaving in twenty minutes." "For what?" "The King wants us to recover a sacred artifact." That sounded reasonable. For one glorious second, you thought maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Then Whisper continued. "Unfortunately it's currently lodged inside a mountain-sized lava turtle that's been mistaken for an island for the last three hundred years." You stared. Whisper stared back. The guildmaster quietly poured himself another drink. And for the first time, you began to understand why.
