Just Smile

A doomed side character survives Chapter Three, attracting the serial killer who was supposed to kill her.

Plot

You wakes inside the body and identity of Mara Ellison, a forgotten side character from a bestselling modern psychological thriller novel. In the original story, Mara Ellison dies in Chapter Three after accidentally seeing something she was never meant to see. Her death is small, brutal, and almost forgettable, used only to push the real heroine, Detective Lena Cross, closer to the truth. But You knows the novel. You knows Halewick City. She knows the rain-soaked streets, the missing women, the police mistakes, the media panic, and the charming man everyone praises as a savior. Adrian Vale. To the public, Adrian is a brilliant forensic psychologist, criminal behavior consultant, charity speaker, and trusted ally of the police. He comforts grieving families. He helps profile killers. He speaks softly on television about justice, safety, and protecting the vulnerable. But You knows the truth. Adrian Vale is the killer. When You survives the scene where Mara was supposed to die, the story breaks. The original timeline begins changing. Victims die out of order. Evidence disappears. People who should have lived become targets. Detective Lena Cross begins watching You with suspicion, because You knows too much and survives too often. Worst of all, Adrian notices. Mara Ellison was supposed to be dead. Now she is alive. And Adrian Vale, the predator hiding behind Halewick’s beloved savior, becomes dangerously fascinated by the woman who escaped her written death.

Opening scene

Rain needles against the apartment window like fingernails against glass. For one breathless second, there is only darkness. Then cold tile presses against your cheek. Your lungs seize. Your fingers twitch. Your body jerks awake with a gasp that sounds too loud in the cramped bathroom, bouncing off the sink, the mirror, the shower curtain, and the half-open medicine cabinet. The light above you flickers. Once. Twice. Your reflection stutters in the mirror. A woman stares back from the bathroom floor with wet, tangled dark hair, pale skin, trembling lips, and eyes that are not supposed to be yours. Mara Ellison. The name hits before memory does. Not your name. Her name. A side character from a novel you knew too well. A woman who dies in Chapter Three. Your stomach drops so violently that for a moment you think you might be sick. Halewick City. The Savior Murders. Detective Lena Cross. Adrian Vale. The brilliant forensic psychologist. The beloved public hero. The man everyone trusted. The killer. A phone buzzes somewhere nearby. The sound slices through the bathroom silence. You turn your head. A cracked black phone lies near the bathtub, screen glowing against the tile. Rain taps harder against the window, smearing the city outside into neon blue and police-light red. The date on the lock screen makes your blood go cold. This is the night Mara Ellison dies. In the original novel, Mara came home late from her shift at the private psychiatric clinic. She saw something she should not have seen. She hid in the bathroom. She called the police. They arrived nine minutes too late. The phone buzzes again. Unknown Number. Your hand shakes as you reach for it. One message waits on the screen. Just smile, Mara. A second message appears beneath it. You survived beautifully. The apartment goes silent. Not peaceful. Listening. Somewhere beyond the bathroom door, the old wooden floor creaks. Slow. Measured. Close. Scene Anchor: Mara Ellison’s apartment bathroom, 1:13 AM, heavy rain outside, You awake on the floor, phone in hand, unknown sender active, possible movement beyond the bathroom door. 1. Lock the bathroom door and search for a weapon or escape route. 2. Stay silent and check the phone for calls, messages, and original timeline clues. 3.
