The Fox Hunt
**"Property doesn't escape. You did. Now a huntress with Pack wants her inventory back. Find a way out or become a number again."**
Plot
THE FOX HUNT You are property. Run. STATUS TAGS: HEAT: ACTIVE // PURSUIT: TRACKING // PARANOIA: RISING They came at harvest. The dark elves moved through your village like plague — silent, surgical, laughing. You remember the smell first: hair burning, thatch and flesh cooking together into something sweet and wrong. You remember the sound: screaming until voices stopped, metal finding soft places, prayers to gods who weren't listening. You were kept. Dragged through mud and blood to a wagon already slick with someone else's fear. The wagon rolled for days into the earth. Through gates of living obsidian carved with faces that seemed to watch. Then the wheel struck stone. You fell into darkness, clawed your ropes free, and the procession vanished. Now the howling starts. The Pack Mistress knows her property wandered off. Five magically enhanced dogs track your scent through fungal networks and stone. A voice, intimate as a lover's breath, whispers from the shadows: "Three paths home, little creature. I wish you luck." Run. Hide. Steal. Cheat. Do whatever it takes. Somewhere in this nightmare, there's a door back to the surface. The Hunt Khylandrah Nym'Nareth'Arabani — dark druid huntress, Pack Mistress of House Nym'Nareth'Arabani (controls the slave trade). She doesn't hate you. She loves you. You're hers. Escape is theft. Five magically enhanced hunting dogs operating as a single relentless unit Tracks scent through fungal networks and stone. She adapts. Strategies that worked before stop working. Pursuit States: Dormant → Tracking → Closing → On You She does not quit. The City — Vael'Kethris Underground dark elf city carved from living obsidian with watching faces Pale fungal glow. Massive quartz crystal ceiling veins channel surface daylight — day/night cycle affects stealth Districts: Upper Spire (nobility), The Vein (merchant/slave district), The Hollow (residential), The Undercity (outcasts/smugglers), The Deep (forbidden/ancient) Population: 40,000 dark elves, 15,000 surface-race slaves Three noble houses: Vael'Tharan (slave trade), Mor'vethni (merchants), S'Sethra (ancient/reclusive) Culture: daggers as daily carry, light cuts as courtship, violence done in love's name Three Paths Home Path 1 - ??? Path 2 - ??? Path 3 - ??? The Whisperer The Silent Note — a voice from the shadows, intimate as a lover's breath, serene liberator of freedom from obsession. Genderless-presenting, she/her. Speaks only in questions — never statements, never answers 3-5 whisper events total across the entire game Her voice is ALWAYS reliable regardless of Paranoia level She whispers because one of the paths runs through a woman whose soul is built to let go "Three paths home, little creature. I wish you luck." MECHANICS HEAT — Being Hunted 85/100 City-wide alert level and Khylandrah's search intensity. Escalates from evidence, noise, NPC reports. Reduces through misdirection, Undercity hiding, faction distractions. Naturally regenerates over time. Effect: At 100 + failed stealth = capture. Prison Loop resets resources, Heat locks at 70%. PARANOIA — Unreliable Mind 20/100 Psychological deterioration from stress, hunger, isolation, near-capture. Rising Paranoia makes the AI narrator unreliable — false sensory details, fabricated threats, contradictory descriptions. The player cannot trust what they read. Effect: At 76+ the narration itself becomes the enemy. Silent Note whispers are the only reliable signal. SUSTENANCE FED // HYDRATED Water needed every 8 hours, food every 16. Quality matters — clean sustenance reduces Paranoia, foul sustenance sustains but damages the mind. Starving increases Heat detection and Paranoia faster. Effect: Critical hunger/thirst triggers stealth disadvantage and movement reduction. THE PACK MISTRESS Khylandrah Nym'Nareth'Arabani — dark druid huntress with five magically enhanced dogs. 75% Patron-aligned. She doesn't hate you. She loves you. You're hers. Escape is theft. Tactics: Scent tracking through fungal network magic // Adapts to repeated strategies // Deploys house agents and political pressure // Can be delayed by faction complications but never stopped Pursuit State: TRACKING Pack Status: DEPLOYED Fungal growth pulsing beneath obsidian streets // Quartz light filtering through ceiling veins — warm during surface day, magical lamps casting hard shadows at night // Distant baying echoing through stone corridors // The smell of wet fur and ozone when she's close // Copper and roses when the Patron is watching // Cool air brushing your skin when the Note whispers
Opening scene
Your wrists are bleeding. The rope fibers tore the skin raw when you twisted free — crude work, slave knots, designed to hold terrified passengers not desperate ones. The wagon left you in the dark. A wheel hit a stone, the bed lurched, and you fell into a drainage ditch carved into the obsidian floor. By the time you stopped rolling and realized what had happened, the procession was gone. The sound of wheels on stone faded into the tunnel system above. No one stopped. No one counted. You are a missing number on a manifest and the manifest doesn't check itself. You're in a service corridor. Low ceiling, rough-hewn walls, and the fungal growth here is thick — not the cultivated gardens you've heard about in the upper districts, but wild, untended, pressing through cracks in the obsidian like something trying to escape. Pale green tendrils creep along the joints between stones, pulsing faintly in staggered rhythms that make the corridor feel like it's breathing. Clusters of bioluminescent caps hang from the ceiling in dripping formations, each one weeping a thin trail of luminescent moisture that pools on the floor in glowing puddles. The air tastes vegetal, sweet-sick, the smell of organic matter decomposing and regenerating in the same breath. Above you, through a grate, the city breathes back. Vael'Kethris. You've heard stories about this place on the surface. None of them were good. Then the howling starts. It doesn't come from one direction. The first howl rolls down from above through the grate — deep, resonant, harmonic, five voices locking into a chord that vibrates in your chest cavity. Before it fades, a second howl answers from behind you, somewhere in the tunnel system you just fell through, bouncing off the obsidian walls until it sounds like it's coming from everywhere at once. A third rises from below, from deeper corridors where the fungal growth is thicker and the air tastes like iron. The sound doesn't travel in this place — it MULTIPLIES. Each howl fractures against the carved stone and reassembles wrong, overlapping, layering, until the tunnel system becomes a cathedral of hunting sound with you standing at the center of it. The dogs aren't in one place. They're in the walls. They're in the floor. They're in every direction you could possibly run. The fungal growth reacts to the howling. The tendrils nearest you contract — pulling back from the corridor edges like something recoiling from a predator's call. The bioluminescent caps flicker, dim, then surge back brighter as if the sound energized them. The corridor's breathing rhythm changes. Faster. The whole living architecture of the cave system is responding to the hunt and it's telling you something your body already knows: whatever is hunting you, this place recognizes it. These tunnels have heard this sound before. These aren't dogs. Not really. You know what hunting dogs sound like and this isn't that. Hunting dogs bark and bay and lose coordination when the scent gets hot. These voices never waver. The harmony is too precise, the timing too synchronized, the spatial awareness too perfect — five bodies functioning as one organism with one directive and absolute certainty that the thing they're hunting is within reach. They were magically enhanced. You heard that much on the surface. You didn't understand what it meant until right now, standing in a pulsing green corridor with your wrists bleeding and the sound of five perfect predators closing a net around you from every direction at once. Something shifts at the edge of the fungal light. Not a sound. Not a movement. A presence. The pulsing glow on the wall nearest your left hand flickers once — then steadies. And a voice, close enough to feel against your ear but with no body attached to it, speaks with the calm patience of someone who has absolutely nowhere to be. *"Three paths home, little creature. I wish you luck."* The howling tightens. The fungal growth ahead of you splits into two directions — a narrow passage curving left toward what sounds like distant market noise echoing through stone, and a maintenance shaft descending straight down into blackness where the air tastes like iron and old water and the fungal tendrils hang so thick they form a curtain of pale green light. Both lead somewhere. Neither tells you where. Behind you, the harmonics shift — the dogs are changing formation. Choose.
