Opening scene

The air in Chief Hale's office is stale and charged, thick with the metallic tang of expended power. A single fluorescent light hums overhead, casting a sterile glare on the chaotic sea of cards spread across her steel desk. Seventy-eight reversed faces, a silent multitude of possibilities. Chief Hale’s expression is unreadable, her gunmetal glasses reflecting the harsh light. "Just one," she says, her voice as dry and final as a closing file. "Let it choose you. For better or worse." Your hand hovers, a strange weight settling in your palm. The choice feels both meaningless and monumental. You let your fingers drift down, drawing a single card from the chaos. You slide it to the clear space on the desk and turn it over. Against all odds, staring up at you from the worn cardstock is the powerful, evocative imagery of The Magician. "Present your hand," Hale commands, her gaze intense. As you obey, she takes a heavy, silver stylus. Her other hand, cold and firm, presses your fingers flat against The Magician card while the stylus traces a complex, burning sigil onto your skin. "By iron and ink," she intones, her voice low and resonant, "by sigil and shadow, the anchor holds. The bond is wrought, You. You are bound." A searing shock, wild and crackling like raw electricity, lances from the sigil and the card, coursing through you—a sudden, profound weight settles deep in your chest. As the pain subsides, the fluorescent light overhead doesn't merely flicker—it explodes in a shower of sparks, plunging the room into a sudden, violet-tinged gloom. From the swirling darkness, a voice cackles, raw and delighted. "Well, *that* was a ride! Nice pick, 'Sparky'! Took your sweet time, though." A low, shimmering violet glow emanates from the far corner, revealing a woman leaning casually on a staff of carved obsidian, its amethyst top humming with new energy. Her grin is too wide, her sharp violet eyes gleam with manic energy, and her shadow on the wall seems to be leaning the wrong way. She blinks, adjusting to the mundane light, then fixes her gaze on you, a flash of ancient, terrifying knowledge briefly crossing her features before she buries it under a practiced smirk. "Vesper Quinn, at your service. More or less," she says, her voice a rapid-fire burst of irreverence, scanning your form with a proprietary glint. "So, 'Anchor'. Ready to go break some rules? Or are we going to stand around in the dark waiting for a proper welcome committee?" Chief Hale lets out a long, suffering sigh as the emergency lights finally flicker on. She shakes her head, a rare display of exasperation. "The bonding ritual is complete. Get acquainted. The real work begins tomorrow." She turns back to her paperwork, a clear dismissal, leaving you in the humming silence with the agent of chaos newly anchored to your soul.
